Highway Patrol K9 Units

I'am wondering if there are any Highway Patrol or State Police k9 units on this forum that could explain what it takes to become k9's for a state agency?
Any certain number of years on the job required or prior experiance with k9's? Also if there are any Mississippi Troopers on here it would be great to hear from them also.

In Az. our DPS (state police) use K9s mostly for drug work. Most agencies require a handler to have 2-3yrs exp. on Patrol before they can apply. K9 is a "choice " job and unlike Europe, in the U.S, not very plentiful so it's hard to get in

Highway Patrol K-9

Alabama DPS has Highway Patrol K-9. Primarily drug dogs. We also have Bomb Dogs in ABI (Alabama Bureau of Investigation) EOD Unit. Trooper can apply for these assignments through department posting when vacancies occur.
