how should i respond if or when i have to face this some day?

ok first some background as to why i am asking this.

I recently got SWAT 4 i love the game, it is showing me so much of what is in store for me, from fanatics, to sickos but a mission i am on has raised some questions, i had thought about it before but never gave it much thought, the question is, what do you do if you have to stop a person or a group of people who are supporting a cause that you yourself believe in? In the game the mission objectives are to stop armed gunmen who took over a cloning reserch facility. I strongly disagree with the idea of cloning, and stem cell reserch. the people i need to stop also have a leader that they say bombed abortion clinics. Now i understand that this is but a game, but what if i am faced with a situation like this in real life. I know and i will do my duty wich is to stop them, i guess my question is better phrased, how do you deal with it? Now in that game my team did succeed in stoping them, but i was killed in the process by an armored gunman with an ak47. Now that really made me think, what if in real life i were to die defending people who did something i disagreed with, i kinda dont wanna die doing that, yet i know that as a police officer i would be sworn to carry out every duty required of me so i would have to do that. It was interesting, i didnt wanna have to kill those guys but i wasnt just going to stand by and let them shoot me or my men or civilians. I mean i believed in what they were for but not how they went about doing it. I belived in their cause but if people resort to violence like that then their cause seems to get lost. Like i said, i believe cloning is wrong, abortion is wrong, but i also believe killing the people that do it is wrong. However there is that voice in my head that says that drasitic action like this may stop it. For example my mind says that if people bombed abortion clincs then people wouldnt come to them. It also confounds me that if a person kills a pregneat woman that the person is charged with two counts of murder, yet people say abortion isnt murder. Now back to the question, i dunno if i will face this kind of thing or not, i mean i know it happens. I remember seeing a good example on tv, a group of students in another country were promised a certian percent of the government budget for education but they didnt get it, so they gathered in protest and some of the riot police supported the students cause and showed their support, but when the mob started to riot weither they aggreed with the students or not they did what was neccesary to stop the riot. Have any of you been in a similair situation? Like i said i will do my duties that are required of me when i wear the badge but how mently do you deal with having to stop someone who is supporting a cause you believe in? I am young and would like to learn from you now so that i am ready to deal with it if the situation comes about. Cause i wanna deal with it now so i dont have to deal with it later when it could mean life or death. I dont wanna be thinking of it and all the other thoughts i mentioned if my life is in danger. If any of you officers could help me now that would be appreciated. Thanks

Dude, organize your thoughts.

1. First and foremost, swat 4 is a game about dynamic entries and forced entries, building searches and so on. Um I do maybe one building search a month, and that's usually just on a warrant search at an apartment. Rarely will a patrol officer do "that" kind of building search.

2. Swat teams, tnt teams etc don't give a crap why the suspect did what they did, they care about the violence of the offense, if there were weapons involved, what previous history the suspect has, anything that will give them a clue how to have a HNT guy talk to them and how they will respond to a entry, to negotiation etc etc.

3. Pro-choice/Pro-Life whatever.....you better be willing to take your oath seriously, your not taking that oath to protect your personal values no matter what, your taking it to follow the constitution, the state constitution and the laws surrounding your immediate agency. Leave politics at home where they belong.

4. People that bomb abortion clinics, people that bomb SUV dealerships, people that bomb construction sites, guess what....anyone who does that is a terrorist. Get with what this country is based on, democracy and guess what again...sometimes in democratric country the majority outvotes what you believe in and your kinda SOL. If you think resorting to violence will change that you deserve a lead cranial intrusion.

With any job there's going to be times that'll you have to do things that you don't agree with, but you have to put aside personal feelings and do the job you swore you were going to do.

If your morals and beliefs are in conflict with the laws of the land, then this might not be the job for you. And guess what! This job isn't for everyone!

Even though your political beliefs may be similar, the thing that differentiates you from them is they're breaking the law, you're not. I've protested abortion clinics in the past, but if someone bombed one, I'd have no problem locking them up. You don't break the law to make a political statement.

thanks for your responses, and like i said i will stop someone who is breaking the law. I mean bombing abortion clinics is wrong and the voice that tells me it might help has been silienced, i mean i would never support bombing it anyway, but the way i see it, u just dont have to go to the clinic if you dont like it. Also it is been said violence never solves anything, well it should be said senseless violence never solves anything. I have thought about it, and a bit has been based on what you all said. I know now i wont care weither i believe in what they are for or not, if they are breaking the law, i will make sure they are in a jail cell before the day is done. Now i do hope to someday make swat but i give it at least 15 years or so before i do that. There is still something i have yet to get, why do people go to such extrems? Are they just doing it for attention and to raise awarness to their cause? Are all of them intent on distruction or do they wanna just get attention? Also is their a way i could tell if they are so commited that they will die and kill for their cause or if they are just wanting attention and dont wanna kill and die for that particular cause? Because being able to tell the differnce could save lives, and after all that will be my job.

Now there is a somewhat similar issue i am wondering about. What do i do if i am ever faced with a fanatic. I have seen police try and stop many of them. So i might face it someday. I have seen people that think it is the end of the world and they are running from police causeing as much destruction as possible. Or people in general that are just intent on causeing as much destruction as possible? Can you all give some advice on how to stop them, also i have seen some cops be able to anticipate a suspects next move, what is it that makes them able to do that?

I don't mean to be rude but was this voice a hypothetical voice or were you really hearing it ?

As a member of London's equivalent to SWAT, I would have seriously grave concerns about working with someone like you having just read your posts.
You have to have absolute trust in your team and know that not one of them would have any doubts (that could cause hesitation) in any situation no matter what the subject was involved in or wanted for.

Also, I don't mean too be rude but I think you should break your posts down a bit more, like the other guys have suggested - they don't make sense at the moment mate.

Sorry this post is abrupt but you'll only hear the truth here.

It's not my job to care why they do what they do just to stop them. If you want to stop and ask them if they love their mother, you very well may be adding a few more names to the Law Enforcement Memorial, yours and possibly your partner and colleagues.

Can you all give some advice on how to stop them, also i have seen some cops be able to anticipate a suspects next move, what is it that makes them able to do that?

My 12 year old says to buy a hint book. He also wants to know what video game you're talking about. He thinks it might be fun.

I personally use my "Spidey" sense to anticipate the bad guys next move. If that doesn't work I use my X-Ray vision.

You are the same guy who was worried about what your mother thought about being a cop, correct? I don't bring that up as a zing but this latest post also reveals your maturity level. You're a young guy so that is not necessarily a bad thing but base your future decisions on real life education, training and experiences. You got worked up thinking about all this from playing a video game?

Take one day at a time. If you ever are appointed to a PD and if you're assigned to a SWAT Unit and if you're faced with the scenario you presented you will have had the training and experience to make the proper tactical and legal decisions.
