  • Am I disqualified from becoming a cop?

Here the deal I screwed up once in life when I was 18, I went with a friend who stole some stuff of cars in a parking lot. I know MORON. We both got arrested, I wan't convicted of anything, but charged with quite a few. Some were dismissed right then, some were cwof then dismissed. My driving record was a little bumpy when I was younger but it's healed now. I'm a step 14, down from a 23. I want nothing more in life than to become a cop, always have. Although I'm ready to go back to school for Criminal Justice, take a security job for experience... or anything needed, I don't want to do it if I have no chance to begin with. The courts say since I have no convictions I shouldn't have a problem, but there not the ones doing the hiring. I'm turning 25 next month. That stuffs about 7 yrs in the past now. I will put down what I was charged with and the outcome for you pros to let me know, I really appreciate it.

I know it looks bad, but I hope hiring PD's see the whole innocent until proven guilty thing seriously. After all I don't have any convictions, and I've gotten jobs before that require a clean backround check. Hopefully it can happen.

Thank you in advance to anybody that has read this whole thing and responded. Any suggestions about obtaining a job (if possible) would be GREATLY appreciated.

    .
dont let the courts lie to you...
im currently in the application process with more than one department...
i was denied twice because of things i did in the past... i have no convictions, no arrests, and have commited no crimes...
however when someone you are with happens to do something illegal you are also considered an accessory...
even if you were not caught, charged, or arrested...

and just so you know, the worst thing i was involved with happend at the age of 14 for me...
friend put a firecracker in a port-a-john, some tissue paper caught on fire, and no damage was done, nothing reported to the police... it was something i admitted to during my background interview... and the next was at age 16...
friends stopped on side of road, i requested to be taken home before they decided to do something stupid, and i ended up just stayong clear of what they were doing... well to make a long story short... they took some wheels and tires, i wasnt directly involved, i did what i could to get out of the situation... no one was charged, no one was arrested... i still get DQ-ed for past criminal activity...

these were both things i admitted to during background interviews.

Sure, you got no convictions and everything was dimissed. However, the guy who interviewed right before you has had no charges ever filed on him and has never been ticketed. Your competition will beat you everytime

It does not look for you. Sorry to say, but my department would not hire someone with such a background. Can't speak for other agencies, but I imagine that they would give you a big NO as well..

It's not an automatic DQ, but that's a lot of stuff to explain away. I seriously doubt you'll ever work as an officer. Sorry.

no worries about that. Im currently in the 6th phase of the application process with one local city agency and in the 3rd phase of 5 with two others...
with my local city agency they have it down to 42 applicants, they plan to hire 35 of the 42.

I can't think of an agency that would hire you (at least one that will give you a badge and gun). I'm sorry if that's not the answer you wanted to hear. But quite frankly, you knew your friend was up to no good. You didn't walk away and it wasn't a "wrong place/time" scenario. By your own admission you knew better than to do what you did.

The purpose of laws is to promote discipline and harmony within one's self and thus, the community. Requiring a police officer who is given the power to take away someone's life and freedom by the state, would require someone who has always had some level of self-discipline. Okay, that's my philosophical schpiel.

That being all said, look at the liability factor. Let's say an officer with the type of criminal record above is hired. He then ends up stealing, or getting acused of stealing. Now the victim is suing the agency. I can just hear his lawyer now, "So, let me get this straight, even though your officer had a history of theft crime, you hired him anyway? Clearly you are just as responsible for the crime as he is!" It's called CYA.
