    Question.

    When I was younger, I hung out with some gang members. Most more of the wanna be type, some a little more hard core. (Keep in mind this was about 10 years ago, and have not spoken to any of them since high school)

    Anyways, my question is, would that help me to get on to a gang enforcement detail? I would assume, being that i have extensive knowledge of the history and 'territories' of the majority of local gangs in my county that it would be an asset. (And I fully acknowledge that the officers already working the detail know the same).

    Should I mention it, or not? And is it the type of detail that is sought after, like SWAT?

    You are taught the things that you need to know to do your job. Having shady friends that you "hung out" with is not a qualification that would give you ANY advantage over your fellow officers for a gang unit spot.

    Its like an FBI applicant saying during a job interview, I really would like to work in an organized crime unit because when I was younger, I associated with the mob and feel that my knowledge of the inner workings of the mob would be beneficial. I don't think its anything to write home about.

      I wouldn't mention it.

        A gang is defined as a group of individuals, juvenile and or adult, who associate on a continuous basis, form an allegiance for a common purpose, and are involved in delinquent or criminal activity. Probably best not to mention that you associated with criminals.

          re;

          There is an agency in my area whose name I won't mention. They had a gang unit that was disbanded not to long ago. One of the gang unit officers was a former L.A. gang member. Apparently the guy never got caught doing anything wrong because other than a few traffic violations he did not have a criminal record. The guy had tats all over his arms like sleeves. He started out in the reserves and after many years of working for free 3 days a week they hired him full time as a gang unit officer. The guy was good at his job and was a go getter, I didn't know him personally so I don't know what his character was like. I just never understood how they could let him in, he was a self admitted former member.

                You should definately tell them
                A thorogh backround investigation could reveal this info, and if you failed to disclose it, it would look like you were trying to hide a criminal history.

                  I told them at the onset of my BI. They didn't seem to have a problem with it. I myself didn't gangbang, but a lot of guys I grew up with did.( Southern Cal) So I mentioned in the questionair that yes, I did know gang members when I was younger, or however it was worded on the questionair.

                  My desire to work in gang enforcement is simply because where I grew up had a problem (not nearly as bad now as it was in the 90's), so that's the main thing I would like to fight.

                    You'll get plenty of experience with the gangs in the jail.
