I love work, I am considered to be one of the more aggressive cops in my current agency, its just that with a one year old son my off duty time is very important to me right now and even though K9 would be frigging great I am not willing to devote that time to my agency at this time. Also I was trying to get accross to megan that K9 is not easy, its not just "playing" with the dog...IT IS A TON OF work ask any K9 handler they will aggree with.. sheesh

    A female handler...not a female dog.

okay...just clarifying that your lazy (you said it)

ooh let me add on what got left out of the post.. you actually wrote...

"What about work I don't like? I'm a mercenary at heart and I don't like working and not getting paid for it. If your dumb enough to work and not get paid for it, then your employer is very lucky indeed."

I'm not completely dumb...i've got OT slips to prove it and a real flexable work schedule because good bosses in the type of unit that I work in.... know that crooks don't clock out at 5 and take the weekends off. sometimes you might have to a little extra work (drive by a dopers house on the way home to see what cars are out front)to make a case fly......every dope cop i've ever met ( my personal experience mind you) has done this a couple of times in their career.

ooh well.....I guess narcs are all dumb then

Vegas, Good luck with that. I thought about being K9 til I saw how much they have to work. It's the cloest thing I've seen to a 24 hour a day job in our line of work. It's something you've really got to want. I'd follow the advice already given. Be a cop first. Who knows? You may finding something else you like even more. Just go one step at a time. Good luck!

I have a very big background with animals. Right now I'm working as an Animal Care Specialist. I've always had dogs. My previous dog before Roxie (my rat terrier) was Autumn and she was a rescued white german shepherd. She was the most amazing dog...I swear she could read my mind. But she always had the obsession with biting the boyfriends on their behinds. She never bit hard...never left a mark, she just liked scaring them. I'd actually love working Humane Law Enforcement...but we just have animal control out here... (which is basically what HLE is) but it doesn't pay anything. I know to make any real money you work hard and move up the ladder....but I think I'll talk to different departments...intern and get a feel for what would be best for me.

Squad51 nailed it. You have to have a true love and, maybe even, an obsession for K9, and expect to be bit! It is a ton of work but it is also the best job in law enforcement. Become a great street cop, well-known to others on your beat and your supervisor. That is step number one and the most important step. There are other little things to help you along, like volunteering in the unit, take some scenarios, volunteer at a local shelter, having a dog of your own that you handled (hunting, competitive K9 sports, etc).

It is VERY competitive, you have to be good...

    Hey Megan,
I know for a fact here in Vegas you have to have about two years service in patrol before you can transfer to a specialty unit. And then the waiting list is phenomenal here in Vegas, not quite sure the waiting time, but its long. If ya have anymore questions, drop me a line.

ssssooooooo hot... it registered 119 degrees on my car. Which, by the way, is a former detective car. My chrysler LHS, my friends call it the "granny car" but it really has some get-up-and-go. Not.. that.. I speed.. or anything.
