  • Quick question about driving records.

I am currently applying to become a reserve officer at a couple of local PD's.
I have no criminal history and a 800 plus credit score. I strictly want to do the reserve thing as a good way to serve and give back to my community. I don't want to use it as a stepping stone to a full time slot.

The only bad part on my record is my driving. From the period of about 96 to 99 I got into some trouble and got my license suspended multiple times for failure to pay fines. No excuse was just young, dumb, and made very poor choices. Now I also didn't stop driving when my license was suspended

The long and the short of it is this, I have 10 DWS on my record from about 6/96 to 9/99. All of them are infractions and not misdemeanors.

No excuses on my part, I was stupid and have to pay the piper as the saying goes, which I have no issue with.

I am a much different person now with a much different outlook on life now.

So now my question, what is your department policy on traffic records for reserve officers?? How long does it have be from the last major cite before they look at you, etc ?

    Any input welcome.

**FORMER LEO** honestly i wouldnt hold my breath. depending on how the dept utilizes their reserves,,,if they drive or not,,if they do drive no you would nt be allowed on,,even if they dont, it looks very very bad for you,,sorry but thats the way it is,, that is a lot of suspensions and tickets for dus. and i dont know about there, but here,,a dus is a misd. arrest,,not just a traffic violation.

Yes there is a large number of them, but nothing else on my driving record.

Hence, the police did their job and pulled me over for things like a cracked windshield or tail light and such when I had a POS car.
They only ever did it when I was suspended, never when I had a valid license. They had a heck of a 6th sense or something.

Anyway, as I said, I have to pay the piper for it, was just curious how many clean years of driving history is needed by most departments to "prove" a change in personality / habits. It is right now sitting at 6 years since the last cite.

All the tickets are out of Deschutes and Benton county

My advice would be to email the department at which you have interest in applying to, tell them of your situation, and see if they think you'd be eligible to apply there. States, departments, etc all have different eligibility requirements when it comes to these things.

well very very few people dont have a skeleton in the closet,,but as far as time frame,,well it just depends from department to department, it s been my experience that usually 2 or 3 yrs for minor traffic, 5 yrs for mild things, and never for the bad, but the before is usually before they will even look at you. but like i said, it depends. someone posted for you to call and ask,,thats about all you can do. the more time between the better,,and its how you prove that youve matured since then,,
