From what I can tell here (in St. Petersburg), Detective is a rank (or maybe a title?) within the Investigation division, but they also use Sgt. and Lt.

The questions you ask vary greatly from one department to another. I have worked for three PD

Kinda sounds like St. Pete. But they offer the option to apply for a transfer to another division (Investigation, Vice, K-9) after 1 year of probation and 2 years patrol. I think Detective is more of a position, with the ranks staying the same.

Oh... and you can test for Sgt after 3 years...
