Academy Questions

I was just wondering, since I am in the military would it be advisable to use the Military TA and go through the academy on my own or should I wait till hired adn go trought the academy on the PD's dime? I will be getting out of the military in about 2 years and am currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Once I get this degree I will be going after a career in LE. Just looking to play it smart adn increase my chances of being the best qualified applicant.

Unless you are going to come back INCONUS before the end of your tour then you won't be able to use TA to go through an extended academy. Keep in mind that if you do go through an extended academy here in CA that they are 10-11 months long and could seriosly interfere with any duty schedule you may have. About college

Unless you plan on getting a Masters or higher... A degree in CJ is a hinderance not a help. Get a degree in something else you enjoy doing becuase the degree is something to fall back on if 1.) you decide LE isn't for you (your family) or 2.) if you get hurt and cant work.

You'll be much more desirable with a finance/accounting/computer science/foreign language degree.

If you have the time and money, put yourself through it. If you tight on the budget, wait unitl you can find a dept to pay for it. Either way it's a win, win situation. As an applicant you need to be better than the next guy, and do more. By putting yourself through an academy, the hiring board will see your dedication and commitment to law enforcement. Your military training is huge, and will definitely make you better than a immature 21 year old.

BTW... Where are you stationed in Japan and what do you do? Misawa, Yakota, or Kadena?
