I heard that most law enforcement communites only allow mustaches? I understand the policy of being clean cut but it seems like that kinda restrictive?

We are only allowed to have a clean cut moustache.
No goatee or beard. I agree with that as well. You have to have a standard about peoples appearance as an officer.
If not some guys would come to work with long hair, earrings, and a scraggly beard....Retired 02/01/13

Varies from agency to agency, but the general rule is usually the same as with the military. If that's a big deal for you, you can put your time in on the street and then if your agency has a vice squad, transfer there. They go out of their way to look like scuzzbuckets (which is the only appeal of vice, imo). You have no right to not be offended.-Neal Boortz

Some smaller agencies up here allow thier people to sport full beards........guess for warmth.

We're only allowed neatly-trimmed mustaches. Detectives and other plain-clothes assignments can have beards, but if they do, they can't work uniformed OT or paid details.Talk sense to a fool, and he will call you foolish - Euripides

I don't know if you guys seen this episode on COPS from Jacksonville, but the officer that responded to this call did have a beard.
You have all talked about beards being unprofessional in law enforcement and I agree, but you have to understand that some men get rash when they shave(there is very few that do). Therefore the deptartment might allow that officer to keep his beard as a way of showing courtesy to that officer.

That being said, I get bumps all the time, so that's not going to get you out of it. It has to be something pretty severe.
It's part of the military mentality. It boils down to two choices: Find an agency that allows beards or don't get into the business. If you'd like me to change my answer to something you want to hear, I will. You have no right to not be offended.-Neal Boortz
