  • Facial hair allowed?

I heard that most law enforcement communites only allow mustaches? I understand the policy of being clean cut but it seems like that kinda restrictive?

Not sworn. But it's been the case with most places I'VE seen around here...I'd be hard-pressed to find someone with a beard in uniform.

It's the uniform appearance of being a professional .If you want a beard go to the local wal mart and be a greeter

I saw a city PD officer with a full beard a few months ago, actually. He's the first I've ever seen. (He was in uniform in a fully marked cruiser)

We are only allowed to have a clean cut moustache.

No goatee or beard. I agree with that as well. You have to have a standard about peoples appearance as an officer.

If not some guys would come to work with long hair, earrings, and a scraggly beard....

It's actually state law in NY, no goatees either. Of course UC is a different matter. I do know in Vermont that you can have them.

Varies from agency to agency, but the general rule is usually the same as with the military. If that's a big deal for you, you can put your time in on the street and then if your agency has a vice squad, transfer there. They go out of their way to look like scuzzbuckets (which is the only appeal of vice, imo).

The City of St. Joseph, Missouri allows Uniformed Officers to have full beards.....
Most of the Patrol guys have goatees and all of the Motor guys had full beards at one time.

Some smaller agencies up here allow thier people to sport full beards........guess for warmth.

We're only allowed neatly-trimmed mustaches. Detectives and other plain-clothes assignments can have beards, but if they do, they can't work uniformed OT or paid details.

I don't know if you guys seen this episode on COPS from Jacksonville, but the officer that responded to this call did have a beard.

You have all talked about beards being unprofessional in law enforcement and I agree, but you have to understand that some men get rash when they shave(there is very few that do). Therefore the deptartment might allow that officer to keep his beard as a way of showing courtesy to that officer.

There is an exemption to military and other SOPs that if you have a documented medical condition that prohibits you shaving you just keep it as neat and clean as possible.

That being said, I get bumps all the time, so that's not going to get you out of it. It has to be something pretty severe.

It's part of the military mentality. It boils down to two choices: Find an agency that allows beards or don't get into the business. If you'd like me to change my answer to something you want to hear, I will.
