Most departments list their appication processes as lasting atleast 6 months. I have heard that it is harder to get hired by Atlanta PD if you are just an average white male (Again, this is what I've heard from other people, not what I know). I also heard they are very big on hiring minories, since over 60% of the people who live in Atlanta are black (actual statistics - http://city-data.com). However, if you manage to get hired, I'm sure you will always have something interesting to do."For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil."
Romans 13:4 -
Here is a big down. Atlanta is a craphole!! The city is dirty, the city planners didn't plan on expnasion as rapidly as it occured. but that's my opinion, and APD's website states 6-10 month application process.Originally Posted by VegasMetro

I had a buddy from high school that got hired onto Atlanta PD and he loves it, but said their is a TON of action. He said its non stop action from the start to the end of his shift. On the downside though, this could happen anywhere of course, but last time I talked to him they had their first female officer killed on duty. And the last two times I was in Atlanta their had been a police funeral procession on the highway from officer's killed in the line of duty.Comment

So how long has he been with the department? And is there room to do other things on the department like being a Det. how long do you have to be on the streets a like a year are 2. And how long is it before you can test for Sr. Officer. Cause I know some places they say after a full year on after you get out the ac. thank you for the replysComment

He has been on for 5-6 years, I havent spoken to him in a few years though. As far as I know he is still there because he talked about how much he liked the department there.
As far as the other things I am not sure about as I havent talked to him in a while. I would say because Atlanta is such a huge department that there is room for advancement into other positions, but I think normally you have to have at least 1 or 2 years on the road before you can apply for that.Comment

If you meet the Reqs your on! A friend of mine works at the dept. Please remember that Atlanta is not the only nice dept in the Metro area. As far a pay goes its not the highest in the area but the name says it all on a resume. If you want to move into the area look at the following Depts. Dekalb County Police (Nice Dept, better hours, better benifits, same pay) College Park PD, East Point PD(Higest Starting pay), and Gwinnett County PD. Forget what ya heard, ATL stays on Fire!!!
Oh yeah as far as good and bad goes I heard they were extremly undermanned, and overtime is more often than not.
If your black you can always try Clayton County I heard thier looking for a few
black men.
If youre white try Forsyth County SO.Comment

APD isnt as bas as everyone makes it out to be. Yes they are undermand, yes the pay is better elsewhere, but not every dept. down there has extra jobs. Atlanta does, and thats where you make your money. The city is split into 6 zones, 3 are realy busy, 3 are not so busy... So that all depinds on what zone you wanna work. Theres a good mix of diversity there, so dont buy into that; if im white they're not gonna hire me... Id say the hiring process takes about 3-4 months. They have an academy in March ( as soon as they have enough to fill it ) then every 2 months after that...
Good luck...Comment
