  • Pink Handcuffs...

Is there any type of restriction on how you officers equip yourselves in your department.

Being in probation, I was sitting in court and the judge made a light-hearted comment about a female deputy's pink handcuffs who was before him(they were secure on her backside).

And then I wondered, how come I don't see more of this?

Are there restrictions of this type of individualization in your department?

I don't think my SO would care, unless maybe they got a complaint you only used the pink on DV offenders or something.

I've seen some that use a colored cuffs so they can find theirs during multiple arrests. I use all black and got a set of Peerless back once when I usually use S&W. Couldn't find the damn double lock next time I arrested somebody.

Colored handcuffs are retarded unless they are used by jail staff for prisoner classification

Black or stainless should be the only cuffs allowed on patrol.

Most of our female officers carry pink handcuffs

I don't recommend using pink handcuffs. Some arrestees/inmates may take the pink cuffs as a sign of disrespect and resist being cuffed when they would have otherwise complied. I saw this first hand when ASP came out with the colored cuffs. I don't mind throwing down, but I would much rather have voluntary compliance than end up with an injured deputy.

          Stay safe.

Our agency never has come out against pick cuffs be our policy says we can't shame prisoners and other negative things I can't remember now.

I've seen another agency in our area using them but I don't remember seeing any of our guys and gals with them. I personally wanted the actual cuffs(Safariland/Hiatts or Peerless) since I needed some new ones, but I didn't want them in the pink or green they had on hand so I waited until they got traditional ones in.

Also, I was on an extradition run to Phoenix/Maricopa County, and it is more than the norm there for the county. Pink handcuffs and pink underwear, and I think I remember seeing them wearing pink shoes and/or Crocs as well. I've been to so many jails and prisons, I can't keep track of the other agencies who use them regularly.

The only time I better see pink cuffs is on me, while I'm helplessly gangnanged by my wife and her girlfriends.

Individualization in general is frowned upon....and pretty much forbidden in equipment related issues.

The policy sections for uniform items are a good 15-20 pages long in of themselves

I carry black handcuffs on patrol, because everyone else has silver. When I do transports I use a pair of orange handcuffs because colored seems to be the only thing to stop a certian other agency from disappearing my handcuffs. Not a fan of pink handcuffs for male or female officers because it's just going to get arestees and prisioners mad.

Handcuff colors are sometimes used to denote they type of prisoner. In this case it's entirely possible the pink cuffs were used to denote a genuine female---not a transgender or female impersonator. I've seen yellow, green, red & black cuffs so to me it makes sense.......

Way back in the stone age when my father was a cop and working detectives, his partner had his handcuffs gold plated. One suspect became so transfixed with the cuffs that they were afraid he was going to try to escape if only to steal them.

Our inmates wear bright pink jumpsuits, and the back story is pretty humorous.

An inmate had been transported to court a few years back. Back then inmates wore orange, and this one was able to slip away and run for it. The subsequent "close" search near the courthouse found numerous witnesses who saw a guy running, wearing an orange jumpsuit- but no one called it in.

I have a black (or "blued") set of cuffs I keep on my duty belt with a pair that are black and silver. I have a red pair hanging off my patrol car's spotlight handle, and I HAVE used pink cuffs on really douchy guys.
