If your inside a railcar going 80mph and you discharge your weapon (mp5a2) forward toward the engine, does the casing drop down to the ground as if the train were standing still or would the casing fly backwards behind you and at what speed would it fly backwards?

This is for all you parents that like to put your kids names on the back of your mini-vans.

STOP IT! There are predators that will use that information against them!

    You're kidding right?

Not knowing personally which direction an mp5 ejects, the casing drops down to the ground (railcar) as if the train were standing still.

You, the train railcar, the weapon, the bullet, the casing are all traveling in the same direction at the same rate before firing.
The casing will behave in the railcar as if you were standing motionless on the ground. However, if you measure the distance horizontally from the point you pulled the trigger to the point the casing hits the floor of the railcar it will have moved 117 feet per second forward with you.

You should have titled it.....ask Monty!

Assuming it is not possible for the casing to eject outside the railcar, the casing would appear to drop in exactly the same fashion as if you were standing still. (In other words, it would hit the same spot inside the raicar that it would hit if the railcar were stationary.) The appropriate frame of reference is the railcar, and the MP5A2 is effectively stationary in that frame of reference.

It flies backwards at 80mph. This simple concept is why you aren't allowed to open your own drinks on an air plane. One errant bottle cap killed a family of seven in the 1984 Sprite/Pan-am incident when it flew backward at 590mph after popping up off the bottle. Its also why the FAA bans whole fruits on aircrafts. The simple act of tossing an apple in the air could cause it to become a cannon ball sailing out the rear of the plane's fuselage.

As long as the train car is going steady at 80 mph itll drop down. If the train changes momentum while the casing is between the chamber and the ground the casing will reflect the change. Think of it as something more simple than a train car, if you drop a pen while your driving your car does it go fly through your back window or does it fall to the floorboard?

Now if you had one of these and were traveing at 88.6 MPH and were hit by 1.16 Gigawatts....

The train and the casing are both going 80mph. As noted unless the train hits nitrous and rapidly increases in speed the casing will land in the near same location.

Technically you have to measure the split second the casing was in the air and the change in forward velocity. It might be less than 1" different.

and becoming a considerable airborne hazard for other aircraft in the immediate area. Then, sooner or later, and in compliance with Newton's Law, the apple, descending from 30,000 ft could pose a serious danger to people/objects on the ground.

Technically, even when you are standing "still" on solid ground, you're still moving at about 1000 miles per hour(if at the equator, slightly faster the further you are from it) from the earth's rotation. That's on top of the approximately 67,000 miles an hour that the earth is moving around the sun. And who even knows how fast the solar system is moving! Soooo, depending on whether you are facing towards the rotation of the earth, and whether you are facing in the direction of the earth orbit around the sun, would determine the exact speed of the casing as it leaves the gun.

                          Does your head hurt yet?
