  • Window tint vs. window shades & curtains

North Carolina statutes are clear about window tint, but what about shades or curtains? There are products sold as car window shades which are squares of static-cling tint film that don't cover the entire window, and there are also products made of mesh material with suction cups that partially block sunlight. I've also heard of custom-made curtains that fit the rear side windows. What's the legality of these products?

In CA you are permitted to use them on the rear side windows. In fact, you can totally black out the rear side windows if you desire as long as you have side view mirrors on BOTH sides of the car. The general restriction of tinting, shades, etc apply to the FRONT side windows and windshield. (Calif. Vehicle Code sections 26708 and 26708.2)
