Family member?

I have been curious for awhile now and never got the chance to ask
may be out of the ordinary but I'll ask anyways. If youre an officer and
either off duty or on duty and you have a family member verbley abusing
someone else in the family, are you aloud to make an arrest or do anything?

What's your definition of "verbal abusive"? In general it's not illegal. Calling you a "stupid idiot who will never amount to anything," isn't against the law... it's mean, but not against the law.

If you mean someone is saying, "I'm going to kill you with this knife that I have in my hand", then yes that is against the law.

In theory, if somone in your family is doing something illegal you could arrest them while on duty/ off duty if they were in your jurisdiction. In almost every instance it will be smarter/safer for you to allow your co-workers or another agency to arrest the indivual.

If you get involved, it can make for a very quiet and awkward Thanksgiving...BUT if it's something dealing with an immediate danger, then cop or not, anyone would and should act on it
Getting loud and verbally abusive around here can be construed as "disorderly conduct" if its bad enough

Now, my question............why do you keep asking questions about family issues? Do you have issues with your family? Do you have an abusive relative that you dislike?

Yes, as a peace officer, you can take an action against a family member for abuse. It is recommended that you do not and that you use an alternative method for addressing the situation.

Involving your family and personal issues when in an official capacity could result in a number of greater problems for you. You should alter your mindset and seek some professional assistance before you become a LEO.

I think you are seeking this profession to clear up all of your family travails and that is not a good thing.

Very few officers would actually arrest a family member. Most would intervene just like you would with your own family.

There seems to be a common theme that police officers are different from the general population. In fact, when I am off duty you would be hard pressed to guess my occupation. I don't talk about my job much or tell "war stories". I put on my Superman suit one leg at a time, just like you do.

Generally speaking taking "official action" that involves your family or close neighborsnot the best idea. Call 911, explain who you are and what the problem is. The 911 dispatchers usually understand your predicament and will inform the responding officers.

If it's possible for you to avoid the situations you're referencing, you should do so. I'm a firm believer in the old adage which says, "when you're off duty, stay that way". Certainly, situations can arise which makes that impractical, but they're the exception rather than the rule. One of the last things I'd want to do. is have to "police" at a family function. If I could avoid that possibility, you can be certain I would. Might work for you to too, in the event you become an Officer.

I usually go with " Will you 2 idiots shut the ***** up." "Your ruining the holiday." After that, a smack or 2 usually settles them down.

The only reason why my writing was like that, is because i was using my Iphone. Second, I' am most certain this has been my first question regarding a family question (I believe). Thirdly, I was curious whereas i know someone that deals with situations like this. Other then that, i appreciate you're concern and advice. I would also like to thank everyone else for their replies and helpful information.

Its not, or my wife would be locked up for LIFE!
But if its coupled with loud, profane, noisy behavior that "angers, alarms, etc" someone else, then its disorderly...around here anyways.
In the described situation, Ive only used it once..... where a woman was hiding in a closet to escape her boyfriends loud, profane tirade...one that I could hear from the parking lot of their apartment complex....BF was a dik and a repeat customer, so when I saw GF cowering in closet, crying, he got hooked...for a DV charge of disorderly, (mandatory arrest and jail time here)...they promptly moved out very soon afterward.

BUT if every time a man and woman got "verbally abusive" to each other, we wouldnt have enough jails in our society

iPhone, computer, typewriter, handwritten! It does not matter what instrument you use, your sentence structure, syntax, punctuation, spelling and grammar are poor and you need to work on that!

CHP SGT beat me to it. Merely because you're using an IPhone or some other device, there's never really an excuse for poor grammar and syntax. You're aspiring to a Law Enforcement career, and I can assure you, proper grammar is an absolute must.
