  • I have a simple question about Background Investigation Packet

    Dear LEO's and Investigators,

I have a simple question about the Background Investigation Packet for a PD.

Instead of filling out the packet that I received, I made a copy of the 35 pages I have to fill out, and filled out that copy as a "rough draft" with pencil this way I can make things easier for me and I can correct my mistakes. When I finish the "rough draft" I can just copy everything from the "rough draft" to the "real" packet.

Now, I have my rough draft packet done and I'm ready to start filling out the real packet. My question is, if my wife fills out the real packet for me with all the information that I have provided can this cause any problems for me with the investigators? The reason why my wife would be filling out the packet for me is that her hand writing is MUCH nicer than mine. She's a school teacher and can write everything crystal clear.

I just want things to look nice and clear. I'm not saying that I have horrible hand writing by no means, but my wife's hand writing puts mine to shame.

As soon as I get some feedback from LEO's and investigators I will start to fill my packet out.

    Thank You All!

Fill out your own packet. Are you going to have someone else fill out a UTT or a supporting deposition for you?

My handwriting is miserable, but you do what you have to do. Use block print, it works the best.

    Good luck.

As a former background investigator... I commend your attention to detail in the process. I find often the applicants who are willing to take that kind of time to keep everything squared away do well in the process.

That said, I'd use your own handwriting. In the event an agency asks you for something such as a report writing sample and your handwriting is completely different than that on your application, they might be a little put off and wonder what else you are trying to put lipstick on (the application process is merely an audition for part of the job)

Like Reils said, they want to see the same thing they are going to see out of you as an officer. Do your best to keep it neat and save the wifes pretty handwriting for the invitations to your party if and when you get an offer/graduate the academy

Write it out yourself, have the wife check your draft over for spelling and grammar, but hell if you took this much time and effort what is a few more minutes. My handwriting sucks, but if I really take my time it is very neat so try that, hell make a rough draft of that if you have to. Unless that is you need the kindergarten crayons…………………………………..bu t I don’t think that is the issue.

Thank you all for the replies. I had a feeling it was best to do it myself. I will start the final application tomorrow and will be taking it SLOW.

            Thanks again!

I typed mine? oops lol. I did backgrounds with 5 departments and 3 of them used the same "state background standard form". Yep, I just photocopied them and sent them off. As a matter of fact I still have a copy.

I would write it yourself. Just take a couple of hours and write very SLOW... it's what I did.

What ever you decide, keep a copy you never know when you might need it again.

My BI told me I passed based on handwriting and spelling, alone. She didn't even read past the first page.

Back when I did my BI packet, it was preferred to have them typed. As a matter of fact it, it stated RIGHT on the history statement "use black ink or type".

I'm glad you were not my BI lol...

Just do it yourself. I have chicken scratches too but I suck it up and fill out the paperwork myself. Sometimes they allow that but most of the time there is an instruction block saying that you have to fill it out.
