Hey everyone, ive been on this site for awhile...first time posting. Ive been looking at some part time departments in the upstate ny area. when hired by a dept. is it true that they have up to a year to send you to an academy...ive heard from many people this is true. although my question is, if that is true then how do you obtain fire arms training? obvisouly you cant carry a gun until you have recieved the training.

I do not know the guidelines in NY for sending an officer to the academy but I would be shocked if they let you become an officer without going to a police academy. In Pa if you did not go through an academy and get certified your not allowed to carry a gun. Needless to say then you cant become a police officer. The liability to let you on the road with no training and carrying a gun would be huge. Either put yourself through the academy or get hired by a department that will send you instantly your hired.

Might want to post this in the NY side of the house for answers that pertain to NY and not 49 other states and Canadian provinces.
