  • Tinted Windows

Are tinted driver and passenger windows on a car illegal (in IL)? If so, what is the charge if pulled over for tinted windows, and would most cops pull someone over just to give a citation?

    Thanks.

    Illinois Tint Law Enacted: 1998
HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN ILLINOIS?

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Illinois, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows No tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.

Yes it is illegal and I won't typically pull people over for it since it is not a moving violation per se.

In illinois it is Illegal to have any tint on the driver and front pasenger door windows, as well as the windshield. I do stop and ticket for tint. The first offense is a $75.00 ticket. Most guys I know will give a chance to correct the tint violation before ticketing.

This is where the fun comes in, LMAO! Do you want to pay the fine? Or would you rather peal off the tint on the side of the road? LMAO!!!!

We stop cars around my state all the time. LEOs have found dope and other contraband as a result of those stop.
How ever they do have the chance to remove the tint before the court date. If they remove the tint, we void the ticket.

I don't have anything to hide in my car so I wouldn't worry about that. I like the car and I'd like to buy it but I'm not sure if the tints would be a huge problem. Is it a sticker/vinyl type deal or is it 'painted' on the window?

In Virginia I do it all the time and always write for it. Even if the tint law in Florida allows for very dark tint compared to Va I still pull those people over. When your in Va you must follow Va rules.

The tint is usually a film applied to the windows that is easy to remove. While you may not be trying to hide anything, we have no way of knowing that. We do not have a crytsal ball in our squad car that tells us who has what. If you like the car, buy it, just remove the tint from the front windows. Better yet, tell the dealer that you'll buy it if they take the tint off the front windows. The back windows are fine in Illinois.

I don't stop for it (and I work traffic), but there are guys that do religiously. Fl law is 18% in the front and 28% on the back. The guys I know don't start ticketing until about 5%, but that car looks to be about 0%. It does look good though.

Watch it in the suburbs. Some can impound the vehicle per city ordinance. In my town you get the $75 ticket and if we want to impound your ride it's a $250 impoundment fee plus any storage fees from the tow company.

Just saying we enforce the law around here. However as others have indicated you may never get stopped or ticketed for it in your state.
