What is a police watch Commander and what do they do?

Our watch commander is responsible for the shift. For our dept it is usually the LT.This profession is not for people looking for positive reinforcement from the public. Very often it can be a thankless job and you can't desire accolades, because those are not usually forthcoming. Just do your job to the best of your ability and live with the decisions you've made. -
Generally it's the person who commands the watch.Comment

At my agency, the watch commander is the shift supervisor, almost always a sergeant. The W/C stays in the field for the majority of the shift and is there for first-line supervision. Lieutenants supervise an entire patrol team, which is four shifts. At my Departement, it's a person who is in charge of the "large watch" that is hanging in the "watch commanders" room. Any and all time related questions have to be approved by the "watch cpmmander".Comment
