    Just for a break...

First off I just want to thank everyone for all the responses to my questions during my time of need. I leave for the academy in 10 days. Im on my way to join the boys in blue. Well yellow since my department wears yellow tops lol.

So Im kinda torn between bike patrol and vehicle patrol. I want to do the bike for excersize but I also want the AC for hot days. Maybe they will give me both!?

What are some of your favorite ways to patrol? Do any of you have cruisers with the bike on the back and you just get the urge to go on bike patrol?

We had a guy on our dept who had a cruiser with bike on the back. He would drive around (we are kinda rural...370 square miles of patrol area, 50,000 or so residents, and sometimes only about 3 officers on). So when he wasn't call to call, he would jump on the bike and do his business checks and stuff on it.

In some departments bike patrol is a specialized unit and may require specialized training and some experience. I would rather stay on patrol.

Lucky, don't for one moment want to dampen your enthusiasim, excitement, etc. Right now, you're number one priority is successfully completing the Academy and FTO. Then you can concern yourself with what type patrol you prefer. Remember, you're a new Guy, so you might have to wait a spell for any special type patrol assignment.

At our department everyone has the ability to go to bike school, however I had to wait about a year and a half before I went. Since I went in Febuary, I've been on the bike one time, and that was for a special detail. Unless you're a very urban department with small zones, you won't exactly have the opportunity to ride the bike all the time every day unless you're in a special unit.

I'm not pedaling anywhere. I'm in pretty good shape, but I won't even walk a block. I like to have my vehicle and all my stuff close at hand.

Since you said your just going to the academy. I am sure the police department will tell you what you are gonna ride when you get out or who knows maybe you will be on foot. If its a specialized unit then maybe in a few years you can try for it. Good Luck in the Academy!
