  • Cops Breaking The Rules

I want to be in Federal Natural Resource Law Enforcement. I was thinking do you agree with using bicycles, atv's,dirt bikes, etc on trail that do not allow them instead of going on foot sometimes. If you do, what do you say to a citizen if they ask you why is it ok for the cop to go around riding on trails that prohibit the bike or whatever breaking the law/rules but no ok for them?

The use of either bikes or ATV's by law enforcement or rescue in a primative area allows for faster response and more coverage. It is not against the rules if the use of those devices in authorized for official use, the same thing applies to law enforcement being exempt from most traffic laws while responding to an emergency. Would you rather ride out of a wilderness area on the back of a ATV with a broken ankle or walk out ?

AGREED......you tell the tree hugger that you are the Police and may need to get somewhere quickly to save them, or as furetto stated...to get them out quickly.
Sometimes bad things happen and thats why you call Police...We are expected to get there as quickly as possible and assist.

The LEO's riding in those areas have a working knowledge of the surroundings and issues that a civilian would not. An LEO patrolling those trails on ATV would be sensitive to the special needs of the area whereas your average citizen would be riding like a madman, tearing up the trails and creating serious issues.

Besides, ever try to catch a rogue ATVer on foot?

Yep, I agree with it. Not only that, I also agree with emergency vehicles being allowed to park in red zones, drive over the speed limit and to have red and blue lights and being allowed to drive in places where no one else is allowed. When someone whines about it and wants to know why we get to do things that they don't, I remind them that the law allows it. Don't like it? Contact your elected legislators and ask them - they wrote the law.

Really now! Only on the bike paths. If I can't get there with 2 wheels under me I don't need to be there lol. Although the BMW's are not as forgiving as the Kawi's were.

Oh yeah, I use the same line.

Its the same reason that I get to be inside the crime scene tape and they do not.....because its my job. Just like I ride my motor in closed areas during parades, at concerts, at special events.......I am the police and that is my job. I dont get to do it when I am off duty on my own equipment. If they want to do the same then they can get hired and suit up.

Tell them to F off. The interests of society necessitate you getting around quickly and efficiently. I know what the philosophies of LE in parks are, but in all seriousness they are foolish. Officers need mobility and you don't owe some passerby an explanation.

I suspect that if you look at the rules, the police are specifically exempted and as such, are not in violation.
Going too far is half the pleasure of not getting anywhere

I routinely drove on restricted trails when I worked for the DNR... I got this question time and time again. My answer was always the same:

"If you call 911 because you fell over the edge of the bluff and you're hanging on a tree root... do you want me to run here or do you want me to drive?"

Or... my alternative answer for the times I was asked why I was driving to the water falls rather than walk like everybody else (keep in mind, there was a VERY LARGE hill that was involved):

"I don't feel like walking up the hill. Enjoy the falls!"

I used to drive my car through the park on and off the bike paths. Someone complained and a general announcement was made for the officer driving through the park on the grass and bike trails to stop it. A month later, they told us to drive the bike trails to be "visible" in the park. Someone had complained about the lack of police presence in the park along the bike trails.

That's what happens when people stop using common sense and try to please everyone who whines.
