How do most of you deal with running someones plate at a traffic stop? Do you run the plate before approaching the driver? Or, after getting license, registration?

Always run the plate before I get out of the vehicle. Some agencies run it and actually wait to conduct the traffic stop after they get it from dispatch. Others won't get out of the vehicle before the plate is given back. Either way, give dispatch the plate and your location in case things get stupid."I sometimes wish that people would put a little more emphasis upon the observance of the law than they do upon its enforcement."

Yep, well said. We (my SO and local PD bros...I'm a Probation Officer here in Nor Cal) always run our 10-28's before hitting a house and tossing for dope...or serving our warrants. Can't count how many 28's we've run on vehicles outside the residence that have revealed the possibility of bonus, wanted dirtbags we might encounter when we make entry. No brainer for officer safety.

YES, I do. I'm in no rush to stop them. I will wait until I get there info back, and my location is good and them light them up.
Now with that said, there are times when you don't have time and you just have to stop them and get your location and tag out quick. My zones partners and squad members are awsome about running the tags you call out also.

I run the tag, and then approach the driver. While talking to the driver, dispatch gives me the 28 back, and then I run the driver when I get back to my car.
What I think I will start doing is running the tag and waitingfor the 28 to come back (like the USAF SF does) before approaching the driver. The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed.

i dont know about other agencies/states but running the plate gives a lot more info on the vehicle and the registered owners than just name, date of birth, and address.

The main thing that will come up is if there are arrest warrants conncected with the vehicle, and if the vehicle is a reported stolen, reported armed/dangerous ect......
I always run the plate before making the stop......The posts on this forum by this poster are of his personal opinion, and his personal opinion alone
