  • iPhone + PO = BAD?

Just wanted to ask if any of you guys are using an iPhone. I've been looking into one for a while and I'm thinking about getting one. But I'm afraid that due to the fragile nature of the device, it may succumb to a fatal death.

So yeah, didn't know if you guys carry fragile items with you. I'm still in training, but obviously cell phone contracts last for over a year.

Would you get a high end phone that is somewhat fragile?

I have a somewhat fragile HTC (aka Cingular or AT&T 8525) windows pocket PC thing. I love it and have managed to go almost 2 years without breaking it.

I leave it in the car if I think it might be one of those calls where you don't want your phone to break. I could not live with out it due to the schedule thing. I'd be missing court every other day.

The only I-Phones I've been able to play with have been criminals, but they SEEM much more solid. When my phone dies I'm going to have to get one.

No matter what you get at some point you will break it. I've been through several and the only way I've found to not break them is to leave it in the car.

I have an i-phone and love it. Like 10-31 Mike said, any phone is gong to get ruined if you go 10-8 with it and do any real proactive police work. It's pretty sturdy, I've only had mine a few weeks, but my wife, who can destroy anything electronic faster than any human I know, has had one for over a year and hasn't killed it. Yet.

I think they have rubberized cases to go around the outer edges to help protect it.
Being a good street cop is like coming to work in a wet suit and peeing in your pants. It's a nice warm feeling, but you're the only one who knows anything has happened.

I know several patrol guys who have i-phones and either leave them in the car during calls or put in their shirt pocket.

Anything can break in this line of work. My only advice would be to get a faceplate clip/case if they make one.

Ok this is the end all answer to this question, while on duty a friend of mine flipped his patrol vehicle on the fwy 5+ times and was ejected from the vehicle, thrown over 150ft, suffered a bunch of broken bones fractured spine etc, should be coming back to work soon. His Iphone was in his uniform shirt pocket, came out of the whole event with a small dent in the back, nothing more, works fine and he still uses it.

I know of a few who use it but leave it in their car. Personally I use an LG phone that's as rugged as a brick and has about as many features. I've went down on a motorcycle and scraped it up, dropped it 71 times, and generally abused it and it works fine. No games, no camera, no picture texting, but it makes and takes calls without effort.
              I miss you, Dave.

I have had an iPhone since July 07. I've used it OTJ and in many locations, training and other outdoor environments where it could be damaged. I've dropped it from as high as 8 foot, had it fall in a puddle and had it sitting in direct 100 degree sunlight for an extended amount of time. All of this, plus extended use texting, internet and telephone. All without any issues. I would recommend the iPhone if you need a great phone. Otherwise, you could buy one of those cheap knockoffs and hope it lasts near as long

I'm offended. We don't have cheap knock-offs, we have what Apple copied and made better.

We just hate to spend money on the next great thing till ours breaks.

touchscreens are more fragile by nature. just spend the extra 3bux (or whatever) a month and get a protection plan.

i leave my personal cell in the car, most of the time, check my msg's when the call's over.

btw - iphones are COOL. my buddy just got the (similiar) instinct. i can see one in my near future

I'm going on my second I phone....the first one and the new 3G I phone. I keep it in my front pocket on my shirt, and I have never had any problems with it breaking. Oh and by the way, you can NOT buy insurance for the I phone.

I got one of the first iPhones. I've had mine on me in a couple of good tussles, both in my shirt pocket and on my duty belt. So far no issues, but I did get Applecare just in case.

There are TONS of cases out there for the iPhone. I use this one; not cheap but you get what you pay for:

Of course if you're really paranoid you could get one of these:

Don't ever pass up an opportunity to keep your mouth shut.

You beat me to it....I was going to suggest the same thing. I have the otterbox defender on my Blackberry, which is worn on my duty belt. It makes your phone huge (mine looks more like a large garage door opener), but it's virtually indestructable.
