  • Smoking in Law Enforcement

Why do law enforcement agencies hire individuals that smoke or use tobacco products? It's disgusting, unhealthy, and sends a very bad message to the community. If law enforcement jobs require such high standards from their applicants, then why do some departments choose to hire individuals that smoke or use other tobacco products? And what's your opinion about those officers that smoke or use other tobacco products?

Tobacco is, at this point in time, a LEGAL product......it is up to the INDIVIDUAL to make the personal choice as to what they want to do....

Would you rather live in a socialist country, where they tell you how to live your own life?.....more so than the health nazis already do in this country?

Because tobacco use is still legal. Just because you find it disgusting, does not make it illegal. If it did, I could arrest 80% of the women I come into contact with taht weigh 300 lbs and think that bare midriff's and spandex make them "hot."
Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

Yeah I can see your point... I just think it looks unprofessional.

And on that note, my dept. policy states no tobacco use in an offensive manner to the public. I smoke and dip, whichever I have time for. But I also don't stand outside your door while taking a report, spitting on the sidewalk...

People who smoke look so stupid and I get great pleasure out of knowing the slow painful death that will befall them for their stupidity. That is what they get for all of their stink and nastiness that they leave and share with others.

How can it send a bad message to the community when agencies hire officers who use a totally legal product? Our job is to find and arrest criminals, not get people to quit smoking and eat their veggies. You don't understand what the police's role is. Personally, I think that a cop with a cigarette might look like he's been around a bit and is the kind of guy who doesn't mind mixing it up with parolees and dopers.

I don't know, but when I find someone who is, I will be sure to have them contact you.

Back to the subject, it doesn't take someone all that bright to know that the warning below means that you shouldn't be lighting something on fire and sucking on it.

Well, to quote the late, great Bill Hicks: "I've got a message for all you non-smokers out there, something I don't think you know. Y'all ready....
                      You're gonna die too".

And yes I know Mr Hicks died of (likely) smoking related illness.

Yes, smoking in front of the general public is unprofessional. And of course it impairs your fitness.

                      But ...

You'd be amazed how much good intell you can get from a bad boy from pulling out some smokes, offering one and saying: "So who do you know who I know?"

And as for this "slow, painful death". Well, love you too. Personally, I never smoke at home or in front of children. Smokers, in my country at least, pay six times in taxes what our National Health Service pays out in treatment for smoking related ailments. Not counting the "I've no idea who or where I am, oops I've lost control of my bowels" years that I don't expect to experience for which no-one has to pay me retirement pay.

Some of these posters now have my permission to dismount from their high horses.
I'm a little bit waayy, a little bit wooah, a little bit woosh, I'm a geezer.

The same reason they hire people that drink alcohol, have made mistakes in their life and even some that went to college in Michigan - because the candidate pool is made up of humans with free choice.

But you can do that from behind a desk. In the end, you carry a gun and shield out into the field for the sole purpose of confronting the bad guys. The enemy. Because it's cool.

                            Because everybody does it.

                            Because chicks dig it.

Because we aren't the Fire Department.

Because it saves money in retirement payments.

Oh, and also because it's still legal.

There are plenty of Depts who do not hire new hires that use any tobacco products on or off duty and makes then sign a contract on it, which means if they go to celebrate a big life event and take a puff of a $90 cigar they have willfully broken dept policy....LAME Of those depts everyone who was already on the job prior to the dept making the policy was still able to use tobacco products.

I smoke and dip, it's legal and it's my choice. Got a problem with it? Too bad, still MY choice like everyone in CA is seeming to forget. They are all for smoking weed out here but they look at you like you're a freakin Nazi if you light up a Camel....

I was never asked during the hiring process with my current PD if I use tobacco products as far as I can remember. And I didn't apply to any that had a policy against it.
