  • Shirt chain

This is something that has been bugging me for awhile. While on vacation and on TV news reports I have seen officers with a silver chain attached to their right shoulder that is then attached to their right breast pocket. None of the officers on my department or neighboring departments have these and I was curious what the purpose of this chain is. Here is an officer with it:

Uhhhh, it's called a whistle chain and you generally find a whistle attached to the end that is in the pocket.

There's a whistle in the pocket on the other end of the chain
"We're not in this business for the money. We're not in it for the excitement, and moments like this. Duty, honor, country, service, truth, and justice are good. But you can do that from behind a desk. In the end, you carry a gun and shield out into the field for the sole purpose of confronting the bad guys. The enemy. There is no other reason to be on the front lines." ~Nelson Demille

Now I feel stupid. Oh well, our whistles don't have chains because the higher-ups thought it would be too easy to get strangled. Probably why we lose them all the time.

the chain wouldnt be long enought to wrap around your head. we used to call it the "new guy" chain as only rookies wore them. i think they look stupid. i don't need a whistle enought to warrant having one attached to my shirt.

We are issued whistle chains. Almost no one wears them. The last time I had mine on was to direct traffic at last year's Brickyard race.
              I miss you, Dave.

I keep an extra handcuff key and car key on mine. Whistle is in the glovebox.

I keep a spare key on mine too. Along with my keys on my belt. Neverknow when you will forget your normal keys or loose them somehow and be locked out of your car with someone in the back cuffed.

I would imagine that somewhere in our regs, they are required for us as well.....

that being said, pretty much NO ONE carries them....even buried in the warbag......
