  • Taser & OC - How Often?

So, I'm just curious after reading a thread regarding gettin' tazed. How often do you have to go through both of these?

I'm askin' in general, and (hopefully), if anyone can answer specifically for the Port Authority PD (NY/NJ). Just curious about that one, 'cause I'm heavily interested in it.

    Thanks!

Usually when certified and then never again unless you do the instructor course or go to a tactical team. or your partner manages to get you instead

Do you have to get certified in the use of a taser? I know it'll vary for departments, but how does it work? Are they issued to everyone? Are only some issued them?

Of course depends on where you are. Everyone gets the training for Tazer. Don't freak its not bad. I highly suggest you take the ride. Everybody gets sprayed in our academy and then you get to fight to get deconed. Each car has a tazer assigned with it. Some agencies everyone gets them some supervisors or no one.

I got sprayed before I could carry OC, and from my understanding, once is all I need. Our department policy on tasers is that everyone who wants to carry one HAS to take the ride. We just started the taser program and only have 1 at the moment, with several more close to being ordered. Again, my understanding is that once with the taser is all that is needed, unless of course you take the instructor class.

Tazer and OC- Only need be hit once, in the Academy.

Now, for the good ol' boys who started policing before tazers and maybe even OC, they have to take the Introductory course(s) and be hit by both, but again, only once.

I've been hit with OC twice, and tazered twice as well (all volunteered). I would rather get hit with OC any day of the week then the tazer! Even though the tazer is the worst, the pain only lasts as long as the shock is kicking. After it's over, the pain is lifted 100%. The OC can last up to 45 minutes. Knowing this, I would STILL prefer OC over tazer.

I wish we had tasers. OC for years. Saved alot of lawsuits. The opinion on the street, I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say, "officer next time I'd rather you kick my a-- instead of spraying me with that sh--". The best thing they ever came out with. Hey Nightsift, just curious how long are you on nights? I've been on nights over twenty years on the street where I plan to retire. Don't want the bureau, don't want rank. From beginning to end on the street steady midnights.

I've had six Taser rides now (instructor) and umm.... roughly 600 exposures to OC, seems my fellow officers are better with firearms than cans of hot sauce.

I'll take another ride before another direct shot of OC anyday.

It amazes me some departments don't have tasers yet. What a great tool. Everyone always asks me, "Oh is that one of those taser things?!" Everyone knows what they are and fear them. Unless you're on PCP..........Then you don't fear a bullet.

When you get certified on Taser, it is training from Taser International, this covers you if the suspect tries to sue or dies after being tased, they will send their lawyers out to cover you. Per their training it is not required, but your dept. may require something else. I say take the 5 second probe hit, it only last 5 seconds and then its over with. OC was only in the academy, now if I want to become a DT instructor then I would have to get sprayed again, that is not going to happen anytime soon.
Why do people think they have the right not to listen when they are told to roll a window down or unlock a door?

I think people fear the taser because they know you will actually use it.

In my department, officially only once for both spray and tase. However, if you're in the training department, they have to go through annual recertification so they get it often. However, you're subject to accidental or occupational exposure all the time. Spray your pepper in the wind and be in the wrong position. Hehehehehe. Just happened to a Sergeant of mine while we were conducting a DUI check point. Got more on himself than the perp. I was assisting a fellow deputy subdue a perp and we were on the ground fighting, I was trying to shackle his legs and my partner was drive stunning him. Every time he'd light him up, I took the ride. But it wasn't that bad, with all the adrenaline running through me.
