  • Background Investigations Training

Any courses, or the best ones (on site, on line, webinars, etc.) for officer/agents who are responsible for conducting pre-employment background investigations?

Your state POST/AG's Office doesn't conduct in-service training seminars on things like this?

Generally, you treat a BI just like any other investigation; I don't recall my basic investigator course having a block of instruction on BI matters though. Do your workups from available databases, conduct interviews with former employers, schools, references AND any other relevant person (usually from information obtained from the employers, schools and references).

Northwestern University Center for Public Safety has sections dedicated to this topic contained within their School of Police Staff and Command as it relates to hiring and retention practices. This may not be what you are looking for and it is a very expensive but worthwhile program.

You may check with the FBI National Academy to see if their one of their Law Enforcement Executive Development programs.

          This is California's background manual

          http://lib.post.ca.gov/Publications/bi.pdf

While it is written according to California's labor laws, the professional principles, thoroughness, logic and areas of consideration it promotes are fairly universal to any law enforcement agency.
