K-9 help/grants

I am looking for help with regards to grants that are available for LEO's trying to get a K-9 for my dept. Can anyone tell me what is out there and maybe the steps to get me started?

One of the best methods of funding a K-9 program is community. No grants, go to community leaders and groups (Kawanis, Elks Club, etc). These types of groups are always looking for a good cause for donations. Write a strong public safety endorsement and take it to your chief. Get that support and take it to the public. Odds are, your chief is probably a members of many of the very groups you want to target and can help "sell" the program to them.

Here are some possible funding sources and ideas:

1. U.S. DOJ (Department of Justice) LLEBG (Local Law Enforcement Block Grant):

3. DAD DAC (Dogs against Drugs / Dogs Against Crime (A canine association that donates dogs to agencies):

4. Community donations:

They must be part of the ownership of the dog. Therefore, community dog demos, community canine newsletters, etc., will assist the community in funding and having ownership in your canine program.

That's what my buddy did for his SO. He got the Shieriff's approval to go to the local media and tell them what he was doing and got a couple of good stories out of it.

Because of the stories, he got several service organizations (Elks/Lions) clubs to donate and got money from several of the factories in town and the local Hy-Vee agreed to donate the food and one of the local vets agreed to do low-cost care for the dog. He also got the attention of the local school district and they raised money as well for the dog (one of the teachers husband is a Trooper in the area, so that helped).

After about 6 months, he was able to raise the money to get a Drug/Tracker K-9 and to outfit the vehicle with a cage and "hot dog" cooling system.

Milkbone Dog Biscuits approached our canine unit (3 dog unit) and donated $5,000 dollars. We were told they pick an agency in each of their districts once a year and make a large donation.
Again, we did not solicate them, but it maybe worth a phone call.
