We qualify four times a year, from the 3, 7, 15, and 20 yard lines. One of the qualification courses is a night qualification. One is an off-duty weapon and shotgun qualification. One of 'em is a "duty ammo qualification" in which we shoot up all our old duty ammo and get new boxes. The last one is done during yearly 40 hour in-service.
Do I get extra points for being giving a thesis?

In Massachusetts it is recommended that you qualify 3 times per year (once under dim light conditions). We shoot quarterly with one done under dim light conditions. Distances are 3-5-710-15 yards.

No, "Dukeboy" is a reference to my collection of Dukes of H***ard memorabelia. And also to the numerous crashes I had driving the county's police cars my first year on the street. After one of my more spectacular wrecks, a supervisor suggested I should drive "more like the Duke boys, less like Roscoe."It is good to hate the French. -Al Bundy

Radar,
The last department I worked for did quarterly qualification, but the range was available monthly and we were encouraged to shoot as often as possible. Standard police range, ie: punching holes in paper from 7, 15, 25 & 50. 50 rounds. We did use DUTY ammo at all practices.
We did long gun, shotgun, off duty, and night shoots twice a year.
There were no provisions for any variation from the standard form. In other words, no6P1 (retired)

My department has firearms training quarterly. We only shoot a "qualification" once a year. This is a typical KD course firing a fixed number of rounds from known distances and prescribed positions. Not exactly real world training, but we have to put something in the training jacket that shows a score to determine you can hit with a pistol.
The other three times a year are dedicated to actual training. We just completed quarterly training last week which consisted of a tactical shotgun course in the morning and a tactical pistol course in the afternoon. The course utilized moving paper targets as well as steel targets. Shooting on the move, reloading from cover, and firing from various positions of cover were all emphasized. Its a lot more fun than "With a fully loaded magazine, lock and load. Is the line ready on the right, is the line ready on the left? etc etc" And will be of much more value if/when the **** hits the fan!
