  • Residence Checks

My department is revisiting the issue of vacation residence checks. Some feel they serve no legitimate purpose other than making people "feel good" Others think it is a positive PR tool. Any input would be appreciated.

As a rule. we're supposed to do them, as well as any Homeland Security checks. Most of the time we just don't have time to check someones house though.

Great for P.R. that's about it....

if you find a door or window that was accidentally left open a day after some people leave for vacation, and you call them and tell them, that'll go a long way when it comes time for levies, etc.

They tell the neighbors and everybody thinks the cops are great!!

Just make sure you check when they are returning home from vacation. We had a guy doing the checks and the people came home early and didn't notify the PD. When he found the door open and was inside checking the house it definately made for a interesting dinner conversation.
Also, make sure you only do the checks when its daylight. Don't be snooping around a vacation house at night and get shot by a neighbor!

We do them each shift, and have found more then one party. They are good for PR though, but when people don't call it gets alittle interesting

Big town here and we get them. They rarely get done, too busy. Each ward has a book of complaint areas and people on vacation. Most of the complaints are drug sales and gang activity, like we did'nt know it was there. Nothing but a pain.

We offer them too.. Its not advertised, but has been done for years. If you are assigned one, it is mostly driving to the house, shining a light & initialing the time you were by. Not a big deal, but it really is just PR, and people love it.

We dont do it as we are state but I have heard of it and I understand the local PD here does it. I dont understand its benefit but I would like to comment on the silly habit of people going on vacation and leaving their outside lights on, 24/7. What a great advert that no one is home.

We used to do them, but the crime prevention guys finally came to the brilliant deduction that a car stopping and an officer geting out and walking around the residence and shaking the doors just drew attention to the fact that the residence was vacant for a period of time. House checks just do the residential burglars work for him in identifying targets. What we do now is take the info from the home owner on how long they will be gone and the contact infor for someone to contact in case of a problem. The info is reviewed at roll call and when an officer is in the area he may do a drive by.

You guys think house checks are bad our department has a program called are you okay. Dispatch calls these elder people every day and if they dont answer there phone they send us to verify if they are alive of if something happened to them. Talk about community oriented.

My dept. does vacation checks all handled by our senior volunteers. The seniors assist on the administrative side for some other matters. We make it clear that the program only helps to deter theft/burg , that it is not a guarantee, and the service is provided based on the availability of volunteers and vehicles.

Its a rural community so it just helps people feel good.

That's what the department I worked for did. Most of the volunteers are retired LEO's.
