  • 12 Hour Shifts

Hey guys I'm new to the forum here, I hope I'm following proper SOP???

My department is looking at going to 12hr shifts. Anyone got some information on them? Would like some input from you guys who are on them. We are a small department with 18 sworn road guys, that includes the elected sheriff on down. Most guys ( including me ) are all for them, just looking to educate myself before I vote one way or the other.
In God we trust...everyone else gets searched.

Are they nuts ??? 10 max with 3 days off is the way to go. 12 is just too much because you won't get enough sleep and can't get anything else done especially if you get hit with a late in the shift call or have to go to court.

    12's do not work for leo's !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hehe 12's work great for us in Texas, as well as 75% of the 100 agencies we surveye d before we went to 12's. You learn to sleep on the days you work and plan everything else for your off days.

We work 14-16 days a month depending on how the calendar falls, scheduled as 3-2-2-3. Only downfall I have seen is that it cuts OT waaaay down, though the brass are not complaining.

        12/hr shifts are GREAT

We do them and everyone on our dept loves it. I'll give you a break down of how our dept does it.

We have four squads. Each has a sergeant, three patrolmen and a dispatcher.

        Squad 1
        Sgt
        Ptl
        Ptl
        Ptl
        Dispatcher

        Squad 2
        Sgt

        Ptl
        Ptl
        Dispatcher

        Squad 3

        Sgt
        Ptl
        Ptl
        Ptl

        Squad 4

        Sgt

OK...so after week 4. Everyone switches from 1, to 2. Meaning they switch from 6a-6p, to 6p-6a. and vice versa. All detectives, lts, and the chief work D, which is 8-4, 5 days a week. All traffic guys work the same schedule as patrol, but work days all year. This schedule works out well because even though, 1 week your working 5 days (Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat, Sun), you don't work more than three days in a row. The next week you only work 2 days (Wed, Thurs). So at most, you work 3 days in a row, and you work about 14-15 days a month. Its called the Pittman schedule.

So say your a patrolman on squad 1. Heres your work schedule for the month:
Week 1: Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat, Sun
        Week 2: Wed, Thurs
Week 3: Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat, Sun
        Week 4: Wed, Thurs
        all day shifts...
Then you switch to nights for the next month...
Week 1: Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat, Sun
        Week 2: Wed, Thurs
Week 3: Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat, Sun
        Week 4: Wed, Thurs

12's were devolped to save the agencies money and they do.
4 10's were developed to put more units on the street at peak crime hours 9PM to 5AM

Having been on 12's for most of the last 9 yrs, about the best I can say is, at least you'll get half the month off. I've been in every scheduale you could imagine, 4-2, 4-3, 3-3, 3-2-2-3. Of those the 3-3 and the 3-2-2-3 are the best in my opinion.

              Bodie,

I will have to disagree with you on the 12s. Before I left patrol we went to 12s and they were great. I worked nights and got more sleep on the 12s then on 10's or 8's.

We got alot more done on 12's. We would spend the first part of the shift shagging calls and paper and the second half would be spent hunting for BGs. Arrests and tickets all went up.

The only real downfall to the 12s was that you could not really do anything on the days you worked, but being at work 70 odd less days a year was quite a perk.

And, yes, the 12s do save the city money, OT and sick leave have gone down since going to 12s.

Patrol is on a fixed RDO schedule. "A" shift is off Th/Fri/Sat and every other Sun while "B" shift is off every other Sun and then Mon/Tue/Wed. I have seen those plans that have rotating days off and I imagine they would not be as pleasant.

Our jail & 911 work the 2 on (Mon-Tue) 2 off (Wed-Thur) 3 on (Fri-Sat-Sun) 2 off (Mon-Tue) 2 on (Wed-Thurs) 3 Off (Fri-Sat-Sun).Our patrol works a funky 12 hour schedule which I hate but they love. It's kinda hard to explain but you end up with 7 straight days off each month. If your interested, PM me.

if i am not mistaken, the 12hr shift is referred to as the "Duponte Schedule." 12 hr shifts will make the day/night long and dreadful or full of possibilities, depending on how you look at it. i dont mind the hours but , "hell week" :3 days (mon, tues, wed) 3 nights (friday, sat, sun) are a B!$%. but i cant argue with the fact that i get half the month off when everything is said and done. god and my fellow officer only knows how mentally draining police work can be...especially in durham, nc.

We've been on 12's for a while now, days 0600 - 1800, nights 1800 - 0600, 4 on, 4 off, 3 on, 3 off. Days 1 and Nights 1 work Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and every other Saturday, Days 2 and Nights 2 work Wednesday, Thursday Friday and every other Saturday. We are on a 28 day pay cycle so it works perfectly, no OT and same days off every week.

I'm working 12 hour shifts right now in the prison setting and I LOVE IT! Unfortunately, you can genrally only work a post for 2 years (sometimes 3 if yer lucky) so I am milking it for as long as I can! Nothin' better than getting four days off in a row......constantly! It's kind of like a mini-vacation!

Here in NJ, the 12 hour shifts that I know about are the Pittman schedule (3-2-2-3) and 3on, 3off. Many dept's here work 4on, 4off 10.5 hour shifts. The 4on 4off is the best in my opinion, you only work half the year. Take 4 vacation days and your off for 12.

I work in the jail right now, and we work 700-1900 shifts, and 1900-700 shifts. I've worked nights and days, and like the 4 days on/4 days off schedule. You can't get much done on your work days, but the 4 days off are great.
