  • Join FOP?

    Yea or Nay?

I'd have to join the generic state lodge, as there's no local lodge anywhere near.

Are the perks (legal defense, etc) worth it?

Yes, absolutely. If the Officer Wilson incident taught us anything; it is the FOP will look out for you. A few on my department's hold outs have joined solely because of what the FOP did for Officer Wilson.

My department has it's own "association" we pay dues and that covers our attorney retainer for disciplinary stuff and contract negotiations. That said, there are some things that come up at times that either are not covered or that the membership vote not to cover and that's where belonging to the FOP is nice. I have never needed the FOP but it is nice to know they are there. They also had a nice deal last year with a million dollar life insurance policy that was free.
