I took 3 years off/on of Community College but never finished, so I have NO degree at all, am I the norm or the exception?

It probably depends on what dept you are looking at, and how long officers have been on that dept. You may find that the old timers don't have a degree while a lot of officers hired within the last five years do. Most of our recent hires have degrees. Several local departments don't hire officers who don't have a four year degree.Comment

MOST of the agencies in my area are hiring only people with some type of degree.............but there are exceptions.Since some people need to be told by notes in crayon .......Don't PM me with without prior permission. If you can't discuss the situation in the open forum ----it must not be that important

I'm 24, with no degree. Been with my PD for three years. Most people being hired have at least an Associates and many have their Bachelors. But yea, a lot of the old timers don't have a degree and having a high school diploma is still the minimum requirement here.Comment

I've had a BA since 2006. Never really used it in regards to what it's for (my major) and I'm not sure if it got me hired but it helps if/when that's the minimum requirement.Comment

It does not take an associates, Bachelors or Masters degree to do this job. What you need to survive and win is called STREET SMARTS AND COMMON SENSE that is all.Comment

We're about 50%, but as per NJ civil service laws ( not all departments are civil service) our department can't require a degree. Currently, we are paid $1050 a semester. several of us are currently finishing our bachelors or masters.Being a good street cop is like coming to work in a wet suit and peeing in your pants. It's a nice warm feeling, but you're the only one who knows anything has happened.Comment

It depends on the area of the country and the department. I started out my career with San Diego PD, I'd say 70% of the department has a bachelors degree.Comment

You can do this job without a degree *and* do it well. However, if you pay attention in college, a college education will certainly teach most cops things to make them even better at the job.

Around here you'd be the exception. Almost everyone we hire has a 4-year degree. A scant few have an A.A., but they generally have something else going for them, like military service.MACComment
