  • Fun in Court

Today we had a "Traveler" come into court for a speeding ticket. It was fun

First of all the prosecutor tried several times to deal with her (all of 20 yrs old) but she insisted on having a trial. Ok no problem we were able to accommodate her.

Mistake #1...............The deputy had given her a break on the speeding ticket ---75 in a 65 zone after being clocked at 82 (SIGNIFICANT reduction in fine). At the beginning of the trial the prosecutor amended the charge to the original speed

Traveler objected to this as being "Unconstitutional" and "not fair" Judge approved the amended charge

Mistake #2............Traveler tried to tell our Magistrate how to run his court. Magistrate has 19 yrs experience as a judge and is often called to assist other counties when they have vacations etc. He doesn't take well to being told he is wrong. He managed to explain to her NUMEROUS times how he runs his court and that her help wasn't needed (OR WANTED)

Mistake #3.............Traveler tried to question deputy on the "elements" of a crime. Prosecutor objected and magistrate agreed that deputy only needed to testify to the FACTS of the crime not the elements. Then proceeded to TELL traveler NUMEROUS times what that decision meant

Mistake #4............Traveler continued to state she wanted a "fair" trial and was not being given one. Judge didn't take well to this

Traveler convicted...............................I almost had to forceably remove her from the court room because she didn't want to leave or accept the guilty verdict and copy of the order.

    Interesting day

First one of these I have encountered here.............................

    Gee, life just isn't fair.

Sucks to be her. Love it when a judge doesn't put up with BS

I had someone like that. He wanted t have a suspended driving charge thrown out on the basis that our road rules were never lawfully enacted by the state parliament with the Queen's assent.

The magistrate told him he would need to argue that in the Supreme Court and it would cost tens of thousands and take years before it would be heard.

      He pled guilty.

Our two magistrates (part time) alternate months. In June he was getting frustrated after a busy month...........There had been a lot of idiots pushing his buttons and he was fed up the last week of the month.

He came into the courtroom that Wednesday and said that the first person that "messed with him" that day was going to jail. It just so happened that the first case mouthed off-------------and the judge told her that if she said one more word she would get 2 days for contempt.-------------------------she shut up and the rest of the court room looked shocked

No one crossed him that day--------------------

Even on a easy day Matt doesn't take any BS-------- Today I fullly expected the traveler to go to jail when she kept interrupting him & I told him that after the case was done and we were alone

He smiled and said-----------" I am a kinder and gentler person that I was last month" and smiled....

Thanks for reminding me of the one about "Fair is where you go to ride the Ferris wheel, eat cotton candy, and step in monkey poop."
Maybe she should just stay on the Ferris wheel, lay off the cotton candy, and quit smokin' monkey poop.

I had one of those once, speeding/registration ticket. The guy started off wanting to read the ENTIRE constitution into the record, which the judge stopped. He then claimed that I could not testify against him because the subpoena read, "The State of Arizona v. Joe Dirtbag" and he wanted the State of Arizona itself to testify against him.

                    Needless to say, he lost.

We had to prosecute our own traffic cases at my last agency. I Called traffic Court the thunder dome, crazier stuff happened there then I thought possible.

Once, had the defendant bring in the actual broken tail light he was cited for. Still broken with a baseball sized hole in the lens frame. He was perplexed why he lost....

We had a Moorish national and a Sovereign in the same day yesterday in misdemeanor court. The judge was not pleased.

When I worked in Iowa as a Reserve, before becoming a full-time LEO in Colorado, I arrested a guy for public intox. He was a particularly cantankerous jerk, and his T-shirt read, "F_ you, you F-ing F_." It wasn't bleeped out, though. This was back in the day when we took mug shots with a polaroid camera, so I backed up just enough so the text of his T-shirt appeared in the photo. I heard from the Deputies working the courthouse my ploy had its intended effect -- the Judge saw it at his initial appearance and Mr. Cantankerous' "I was just minding my own business" defense lasted for exactly two seconds

My other favorites are scrotes who show up in court, pleading not guilty to a marijuana charge, while waring a gigantic marijuana leaf on their T-shirt with the word "legalize." Most of the time they are too dumb to realize the irony and are not making a statement by their act.

I bet that was an absolute joy. I have yet to run into one of the moorish bunch. Run into sovereign types from time to time, but nothing too bad yet.
