Today we had a "Traveler" come into court for a speeding ticket. It was fun
First of all the prosecutor tried several times to deal with her (all of 20 yrs old) but she insisted on having a trial. Ok no problem we were able to accommodate her.
Mistake #1...............The deputy had given her a break on the speeding ticket ---75 in a 65 zone after being clocked at 82 (SIGNIFICANT reduction in fine). At the beginning of the trial the prosecutor amended the charge to the original speed
Traveler objected to this as being "Unconstitutional" and "not fair" Judge approved the amended charge
Mistake #2............Traveler tried to tell our Magistrate how to run his court. Magistrate has 19 yrs experience as a judge and is often called to assist other counties when they have vacations etc. He doesn't take well to being told he is wrong. He managed to explain to her NUMEROUS times how he runs his court and that her help wasn't needed (OR WANTED)
Mistake #3.............Traveler tried to question deputy on the "elements" of a crime. Prosecutor objected and magistrate agreed that deputy only needed to testify to the FACTS of the crime not the elements. Then proceeded to TELL traveler NUMEROUS times what that decision meant
Mistake #4............Traveler continued to state she wanted a "fair" trial and was not being given one. Judge didn't take well to this
Traveler convicted...............................I almost had to forceably remove her from the court room because she didn't want to leave or accept the guilty verdict and copy of the order.
Interesting day
First one of these I have encountered here.............................
