What makes you qualified to do network maintenance, trouble shooting, problem solving and repairs? As an administrator, I would not consider it without you showing me documented IT education and experience.

I understand what your dept. is doing because mine is the same way. They want us to fix our own camera systems, radars, and do our own equipment installs. I tell them I do not know about wiring and if something happens to me because of their orders, they will be speaking with an attorney. That pretty much stops them in their tracks. LIABILITY is a big and powerful word.

Help with extra duty assignment memo- Computer Tech
So my department of about 25 officers, currently in a major budget crunch, is trying to find ways to save money by training officers in things that can be done in-house. We recently trained a few officers on motor pool repair, and now they can do minor repairs/upgrades to our units which saves the department money.
The department is also anticipating needing to hire a part time I.T. person at about $~20k a year within the next 3 years. I'm trying to come up with a proposal to my Chief that would instead allow me to do the I.T. things to our computers, at a LOT less than $20k a year. I was thinking more along the lines of 2 hours of O.T. a week for maintenance/upkeep. And then a standard 2 hour "call out" pay if I'm ever needed on my days off.
Any tips from supervisors/admin on this board on what to say? And would anyone be willing to review my memo for tips?Tags: None
