  • Dpms.......... Ar15

    From what I've read in other places, those 4 letters, "DPMS", invoke either love or hate.

    Many people own them and LOVE them and swear by their reliability. Some police departments use them and love them.

    On the other hand, many people hate them and think they are the worst on the market.

    What say you?

    I'll pass on DPMS. Hit and miss quality.

      I've been called a "Colt snob" in the past.

          I do not like DPMS, it has only seemed like real poor quality to me....compared to colt or bushmaster.

            Colt and Bushmaster in the same league??? I don't think I've ever heard anyone (other than a Bushmaster rep) say something to that effect.

            I would shy away from Bushmaster for a duty rifle when other options exist: DD, BCM, LMT, etc.

            I'd post these questions in the firearms section so the gun guys see them. They tend to get lost in the shuffle in here.

              DPMS is IMO kinda in the middle with quality. But I think they have improved dramatically in that last few years. My dad was wanting an AR and I was going to build him one. Long story short due to time constraints I went shopping for one. At one of our local gun shops I compared what was available. I ended up buying him a A4 style 20" built by DPMS. It has actually turned out to be a fine reliable and very accurate rifle. It shoots right up there with my Noveske's and Colt guns with no problems.

Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson

                I use a Panther Lite-16 and it has no troubles at all, accuracy or otherwise.

                  I like mine (DPMS) - haven't put many rounds through it, but I've had no problems.

                    I bought a DPMS AR a few years ago (my first AR) off gunbroker and it was DPMS lower w/unknown upper (I assume DPMS) with an LMT bolt carrer.
                    I have had no issues w/it and put A LOT of rounds through her.
                    Its been great for shooting at the range and playing on the ranch.

                      The only DPMS part I would use is a stripped lower, and only if it was all that was available.

                      At BEST, they are manufacturer of hobby grade weapons.

                        DPMS= Didn't Pass Millitary Specs

                        I have worked with several DPMS upper assemblies and have found them to be sloppy in terms of finish and workmanship. My partner, a longtime department firearms instructor and gunsmith, has complained more about DPMS parts than almost any other manufacturer of anything in the entire world...Plus, those guys on "Son's of Guns" love DPMS, which is enough of a death blow for me...

                        LMT is a good midrange company, Rock River Arms is also a solid company with good products that I would look at instead.

                          I was issued a DPMS Panther 16 just before the rest of the department got S&Ws. Mine has been fine so far, with the exception that when I went to put on a tactical sling, the rear stock threads were "buggered" and would not budge. I also tossed the mags it came with (they were not dependable- did not seat well every time) and use magpull.
                          We just got 3 shorty select fire S&W's, and there is the possibility I may be able to trade.
                          //fingers crossed
