  • Firing a Taser from a moving vehicle

I don't think it would have ever crossed my mind to try to Taser someone on a bicycle from the driver's seat of my patrol car. Sounds like a bad situation all around.

Deadly chase brings new look at stun gun use

I'm not sure why the Taser is even relevant. If he never hit the suspect with the barbs, then it's just an accident resulting from the pursuit. Unless he swerved closer to fire the Taser, and that's what caused the accident.

Regardless, it sounds like the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is more interested in causing trouble then stopping crime.

I do not see any reason why use of a Taser from a vehicle should be prohibited; I just can't think of many situations where it would make sense. But if someone were attacking a fellow officer and the quickest non-lethal way of disabling the suspect was with a Taser, then I would use the Taser.

I will beat someone with the back of the taser if I have to. The question is, do I have to?
Due to the Juvenile bickering and annoying trolling committed by members of this forum I have started an igore list. If your name is listed below I can't see you.

Agree with the above. Maybe it shouldn't be against' policy but the officer involved must ask himself "Does this really make sense?"

It's against our policy, and considering how people fall in random directions when getting tased, I'd advise against it. I know the officer feels horrible, so there's going to be no monday morning quarterbacking... but hopefully people will think about this and say "Is it really worth doing this to catch this guy?"

I wouldn't ever really define a situation in which a TASER should be avoided, but I can think of examples, pregnant woman, person in water, moving vehicle, et al, in which a TASER wouldn't typically be the most appropriate weapon. When I was a city officer and hand that instrument our policy really only suggested that we use a different alternative if we were fullly aware that certain offenders exhibited certain "conditions." Age, heart condition, pregnancy, water, and some other factors were mentioned, but there was never anything that said "DO NOT USE the TASER. I wouldn't do it from a moving vehicle because I think it'd be a wasted cartridge. The leads aren't that long, and the barbs can't be moving at a high enough velocity to negate the movement of your vehicle AND your target.

No, the real question is: How bad do you want to?

Maybe the Surgeon General should issue a warning...

As far as using the Taser with a subject standing in water there is no problem with that, at one time there was even a video on the Taser site of that very scenario.
