  • Military surplus firearms

I was wondering if anybody knows how to get surplus rifles for my agency. We currently carry M4's and are perfectly happy with them. The problem is, we don't have enough to go around any more since our department is growing. Due to the growth, the budget is being spent on other essentials such as vehicles and their equipment, training and building and logistics. We are coming up short in some areas, patrol rifles being one of them. I heard of agencies getting old military rifles from the Army or Marines and putting them into service in the field. I would like to know how we could go about doing this or if such a program exists. If so, is there a specific department we would contact or should I just call my nearest military installation? Any help would be appreciated.

If it helps, I work in NJ and we have at least one base for the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard close by.

Contact the Homeland Security Coordinator in your district. Explain what you need and work through them. They can find the best deal for your agency. They will also find the necessary ammunition, scopes, spare parts, etc. If they cannot, they will put you in touch with an agency that will help you.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

Being a mil guy, I can offer a little bit of information on the subject. The military uses what they cal DRMO (Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office). They are the used car lot, pawn shop, junk yard for the entire DoD. There is a specific process on obtaining things from DRMO. First, other DoD services get a crack at it (Army doesn't need it but the Navy does). Then other Federal Agencies (National Park Service, DEA, FBI, Bureau of Inidan Affairs, US Forest Service). Then onto the states, then counties, then municpal agencies.

Here is the other part of it. This might seem a little overwhelming, but it isn't. There are lots of good stuff out there you just have to look for it. However, if you think you are going to pick up 10 new Armored HMMWV's and fifty brand new M-4's don't count on it. But you might be able to get some older M-16's which would be a great start, and could be eventually modiifed (collapsable stocks, and shorter barrels) later when the department has time.

Each state has a coordinator for "Surplus Property" at the state level. You might be able to coordinate with that office and see when they "go shopping" so to speak. I do not have any numbers in NJ or for the DRMO in your area. However Google IS your friend, google DRMO and go to town. When you get a number call the office and inquire if the have a Law Enforcement contact in your county and work with them to get the ball rolling.

Good luck with your serches. You would be surprised what the "government" get rid of.

We cashed in on the DRMO grab a few years ago. One of the drawbacks was that we had to take a pre-determined number of the items we were looking for. I remember that we wanted about 20 five gallon fuel cans but we had to take 72.
Of course, we had no problem taking 250 M 14 rifles.

Call the Base Commander or the ProvosMarshall of the Army Base near you. We got a crate full of M16's and M14's from them our near by base one time and since we picked them up we didn't even have to pay shipping.
            its worth the call
