    From the front page.....

S.C. Mayor Bans Police Pursuits on Foot

The mayor of Wellford, S.C. is defending a policy she issued earlier this month which bans police officers from chasing suspects on foot, according to WSPA-TV.

On Sept. 2, Mayor Sallie Peake issued a memo to all of the city's officers that read: "As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever."

Peake told the news station that she issued the mandate because several officers have been injured during chases, driving up insurance costs for the town.

The city is paying $20,000 annually in workers' compensation claims, much of which goes to the police force, she said.

According to Wellford Police Chief Chris Guy, three officers have been injured during foot chases in the last two years

Guy has told his officers to abide by the policy and says they can still protect the public.

"Just because a suspect may run does not mean we can't identify them, sign warrants, and catch them later," he said.

Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright disagrees with Guy's assessment, telling WSPA-TV that when a suspect gets away, there is always the chance he could hurt someone before officers catch up with him.

"If a bank robber or a drunk driver or a shoplifter or somebody with a warrant runs on foot, it's our obligation to do what we can do to bring them to justice," he said.
NEVER TURN YOUR LIFE AROUND. Most people that do end up shot stabbed or maimed in other violent ways....

If you watch the interview, you see how crazy this mayor really is. It's frightening.

Then why in God's name do they need a police dept? Just hire security guards and give them a punch clock. Better idea yet, use the USPS and mail report forms. Use certified mail for more serious crimes like murder, sex crimes, armed robbery, etc. No better idea yet, just put all the report forms on the city's web site and the MAYOR can answer them, or at least his secretary can.... Seriously this has to be one of the stupidous, political, BS, stunts that I've heard in the last 30 years.

Maybe the fleeing suspect will clilmb into the mayors window cause he knows he is safe, first with a presidential endorsment message that cops cant check out individuals climbing through a window, and now he will know we can not chase after them on foot anymore. Good Job, and i thought i had it bad out here in cali...........................

Somebody is going to get seriously hurt and this stupid policy won't protect the officers from a negligence law suit.

The policy in it self is negligent and they might as well hand out blank checks to the victims of crimes that could have been resolved if the bad guys didn't just lightly jog away.

If I was there I would GTFO or try to get a vote of no confidence in the mayor started.

I agree that the policy is dumb, I think the mayor is an idiot. But the officers won't have any liability whatsoever if a person is hurt because of the policy. There are SEVERAL laws which will protect them, the most obvious being that the supreme court has ruled that we're not required to actually "protect" anyone. The police haters like to latch onto this tidbit and claim the police aren't needed. It was really decided to prevent people from suing the police for not magically being there when a crime took place.

What she is going to create (not that she gives a crap obviously) is absolute disrespect for LE. Karma will be when she is the victim of a crime and the suspect turns to run. THAT will be karma. And she's earning it.

Yup, and I absolutely hope that one of the officers witnesses her get robbed or beat up and when the criminal runs, he just sits in his car, quietly grabs his clipboard and walks over to her to take the report.

The way she speaks and writes (in the memo) screams "ghetto."

This supports my theory that the number of sane people within this country is rapidly dwindling.

I believe we still have places that house people like this. Can one of her officers pink slip her?
Most people fail because they trade what they want MOST, for what they want at the MOMENT.

The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, WHO can know it?

Is it any surprise that cops don't trust anyone?
