  • "Keep away" felony warrants

So, today I spot a speeder and get him on radar doing 51 in a 35 mph zone. He's a Californian, like I used to be. I pull him over, get the paperwork and I get the heebie-jeebies which tell me to run him. A few key strokes later and the red alert in the "messages" box starts to flash. He's wanted back in California (San Bernardino, to be exact) for a felony 11377(a) H&S possession of dangerous drugs.

I scroll down on the page and get exactly what I fear is coming next: NO Extradition

One signature on a moving citation later, I inform him of the warrant. He assures me there must be something wrong, but he'll look into it when he goes back to CA....yeah, right!

A few months ago, a guy I desperately wanted to arrest for something...anything...had the same MDC drama, felony narco dealing, and including a warning for *officer safety - will fight police* but again, NO Extradition.

Okay, my traffic violator today that was California 1000 miles away. I get it. The previous guy was from Kansas, a couple of hours away.

I get it....but I don't like it....letting felony warrants walk or drive away. Perhaps these warrants are in the system to keep these turds from washing back up on the shores of CA and KS, and that is the sole reason for the warrant. Years ago, in L.A., I had an Idaho felony warrant suspect. Idaho was concerned enough to include bordering states (UT, WY, WA, NV) on their warrants. CA was just too far.

Anyone else want to share a tale of felony warrant "NOEX" frustration?

our local pd would not extradite from a city a little over hour away for outstanding Robbery warrants.....and they wonder why the crime is so bad

San Bernardino County is notorious for that. We are all of an hour and a half away, and had one like that two weeks ago... one felony 11350 HS warrant, and 148a for fighting the police, and a traffic warrant... all from SB county. No ex. Lame. Had one for 250K public intox warrant with noex from SB too.

My county is bad about some, but we don't put them in NCIC or CLETS. Whats the point?

I had Canada RCMP come get a guy for a $15,000 warrant about two years ago...

Here's the good thing: social security gets the warrant info (or is supposed to) before you collect benefits you have to clear it up. So people who fled across the country have to "extradite" themselves if they want their gov money

In my book, CA is the of worst of the worst when it comes to that.....

We have a local dude that has no DL due to warrants in CA (they finally suspended his DL after 2 years....) but the State won't extradite on his multiple felony drug charges......

So, he continues to be a POS in our County..... The only good thing about it.....is that when one sees him driving....it's P/C to stop his sorry *** and hook him up for muliple summonses.... He's stupid enough to play the old "I'm valid" game till he figures out that you ran him....then he goes into the "I'm a victim man....hook a brother up" game......then goes into the "Bitter asshat" game plan once he realizes you aren't falling for his BS....

Our State PA finally got tired of seeing him in court and is starting to not make deals with his Attorney (and yeah, that falls back on our PA for playing deal maker and thinking this dude was going to go straight eventually) so we can get him hooked up on felony counts...and make him go away for a while.....

I actually called CA and talked to his PO and the State....and even VOLUNTEERED to bring his *** back there.....but they don't want him....as they clam they are too jammed up in court to deal with him...

Gee...thanks....like we want his sorry asss around here.....??

Oh...did I mention that he is one of our biggest drug dealers around here....and continually beats the crap out of his wife and her sister just because....but they will never call 9-11 on him....

Had a guy with a felony drug warrant out of Florida, along with another one out of Maryland, both refusing extradition. Evidently he was a big time drug pusher, however he was smart enough to not stay in the states where he had gotten caught.

Had a baby mamma drama call one time, decided to run the turd. He was positive 29 (warrant) out of get this a local agency 10min away. Warrants for Vehicle theft, carnal knowledge of a juvenile. We were even going to bring him to them !!!!!!!! They said they couldn't take him. I turned him loose and didn't tell him about the warrants, so he atleast plays it cool for the next guy, plus, I thought it would be real zhitty to tell him about the warrants and then let him walk. I thought that was just sad as hell.

My main job is serving arrest warrants for the courts, I got a call from state police at the other end of the state saying they had a guy of mine with warrants on a traffic stop and do I want him.

Well, I really didn't want to trek the 7hrs it would take but I WILL NOT let someone walk on a warrant if they are anywhere in this state.

He was lodged at the local jail and I picked him up later that night for transport back. The troopers were impressed that I would even come get him.

I hate letting people go when I find out they have warrants in another state and they don't want extradition.

I dealt with a guy for almost 4 hours one time trying to identify him and why his info wasn't coming back.

Yes, he had warrants but the other state wasn't coming to get him.

I charged him with as much as I could think of and now the DA is making him take care of that other warrant before any deals are worked out. So in the end it wasn't for nothing as the other warrant showed up in a pre sentence report that the Judge and DA got to see.

I picked up a guy on a warrant for a weapons violation out of MA - confirmed extradition, hooked him- he ended up at county for the night. A day or two later, MA decided they weren't going to come get him after all...go figure.

Before I became a sworn officer I worked for a small agency that dispatched for several departments. One of the favorite stories around the dispatch center was the Sheriff's recent trip to Florida. Local tool had a warrant out of Florida but "surrounding states only" extradition. He kept causing problems and was continually getting minor misdemeanor charges locally. He was suspected to be in the meth trade, but never caught with anything. Well, eventually the Sheriff got tired of seeing him. He locked him up for the warrant and transported him to Florida himself just to be rid of him.

I never thought of it before that, but extradition is just where they'll come to get Johnny Dirtbag, nothing prohibits you from taking him to them...
                  I miss you, Dave.

I bet it gets worse with the current economy. Denver has muni warrants that are only valid within the city/county limits. That's clearly their attempt at keeping their turds outside of the city. When I worked in the Colorado mountains my boss at the time was old school. If we came across someone who was a "troublemaker" he would direct us to take them to the county line, which happened to be at the summit of an 11,500 feet above sea level mountain pass and tell them to go to the next county.

Working in Las Vegas I get probably a dozen No-Ex warrants out of California every shift.

A female I arrested just the other day had 2 Robbery warrants out of Cali that were No Ex. Luckily she went on PCS Cocaine anyway.

Cali actually has a No Ex Homicide warrant for a guy who has the same name as one of out common customers. It's not our guy so I never had dispatch check on it.

I got my first job as a cop in California in 1969. Even back then when it came to picking up a prisoner, the agency I worked for refused to travel more than one mile for every dollar of bail on it's own warrants. Bail amounts 40 years ago were fairly small, so my agency never went too far, even within the state.
Going too far is half the pleasure of not getting anywhere
