  • Off duty carry

Do all of you carry while off duty? I just graduated the academy not to long ago and I am torn wether or not to carry while off duty. I don't live in my jurisdiction. If you do carry while you are off duty can you tell me why? Same if you don't carry. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on your graduation. To answer your question I always carry off duty because whether you like it your not you are really on duty 24/7 and you should always expect the unexpected. In my state as long as you are duly sworn and are certified you can carry anywhere you want. A certified reserve can carry off duty outside of their jurisdiction as long as they have a letter from their chief/sheriff. Whether fulltime or reserve we do have to have our commission card and our CLEET card(counsel on law enforcement education and training) on our person. Just like having your drivers licenses. Be safe and enjoy the ride!!!

As you progress in your career, you will make enemies of those you have incarcerated or have to testify against. You never know when you might run into one. We had a detective who was assassinated because he was going to testify against someone in court. You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. I've carried my gun and my burden for over 25 years.

I used to carry of duty rarely, I then ran into an OG gangster while at a bar, IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD over 40 miles away from his hood. He saw me at the same time I saw him, he ordered a beer for me and walked it over then said, " I know you're strapped and I ain't, here's a drink, maybe we'll see each other again."

i had my .38 revolver that night, ever since then I carry my Glock 23 or 27 when outside my house, EVEN if it's to check the mail/

What would you think if you got a call on duty for a robbery in progress and when you show up it is another cop. He proceeds to tell you he went to the store with his daughter and as he left some gangster came up crammed a gun un his face and took his wallet, and his buddies came up and raped and or illed his daughter in the neighboring alley. Luckily he is a trained observer so he got lots of good information and you are going to have one hell of a detailed report to write.

Now, I know that is exteme and I will never had a call like that, but tell me you would not walk away shaking your head. Wondering what the hell was wrong with the idiot who had the right to carry, to training to use, and the duty to protect with- if neccessary- a gun and he did none of the above. I am not saying someone who does not carry is an idiot, but I do believe I will leave my gambling up to buying lotto tickets. Not taking the chance of letting myself, my family, and the public at large down by allowing myself or those around me to be victimized with out recourse.

It is one thing to CHOSE not to intergect youself into a situation, and another entirely not to be able to out of fear or lack of equipment.
By the way when you police do would you give a criminal a timeout or break for being on or off the clock or with their family? Do you think they are going to give you one? By the way I am refering to a legitimate criminal not some kid or thug who has traffic warrants or is a petty criminal, there is a time and place for some stuff. But when they are a real bad guy/dirt bag I have no mercy and expect none in return...

Anywhere, everywhere and all the time. Bad guys don't go off duty. This is not a Looney Tunes cartoon where the fight stops when the time clock rings at the end of the day. Bad guys carry 24/7, and LEOs refusing to carry because they are "off the clock" are just as much a target as any other prey. There are different opinions on taking action off-duty. Forget that debate, carry if nothing other than to protect yourself and your family.
"You don't want the truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall... I have neither the time, nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it."

I carry off duty to protect myself and my family. I can legally carry a gun, so I do.

Like old-timers on the job have told me and is a common phrase, "It's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it kid!"

One question. ARE YOU A SHEEP DOG OR A SHEEP?

                  Sheep Dog you carry

                  Sheep You Don't

Like yellowreef said - everywhere, all the time. Vacation, walking the dogs, mowing the lawn, peewee basketball, Mom and Dad's for dinner, my other job, post office, bank, the movies, snow tubing at the ski resort, etc, etc, etc.

You don't leave home without your keys, wallet, cell phone, and so on, your gun (w/a reload), knife, badge, and ID should also be part of the everyday stuff you carry with you.

God forbid anything should ever happen to my wife or children because I chose not to carry when I could have (should have!).

One more thing, I just noticed that you're in D.C., IMO it shouldn't even be a question!

I carry everywhere when I am off, EVERYWHERE, no exceptions. I do not however, carry my full size duty weapon. I carry my Kahr CW45 with two reloads. When travelling in the car I always have the smaller gun on and the duty weapon wedged between the seats. Like some have said, you never know when you will run into somebody that you locked up when you are out with your family. I have done it when I drove 2 miles from my home to get gas, and I live 35 miles from where I work.
Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).

Brother my advice is to carry constantly. I have been an officer for 8 years this month and not a day has gone by that I havent had a firearm on my hip. We are lucky, especially now thanks to the bill that was passed a few years back, that we can legally carry a gun throughout the country (with certain exceptions of course). You should do it to protect yourself, your family, and all those you care about.

What actions you take are up to you. I've made up my mind when in an off duty situation I may or may not deploy my weapon.

It's there if I need it none the less.

Ever bumped into someone on your day off you met at work? Me too. That's why I always carry.

You need to read this article:

                              http://www.gleamingedge.com/mirrors/...sheepdogs.html

Everyone posts links and no one ever reads them, but you really need to read this one. It's a short read and it should permanently clear up this particular question for you. I think this should be required reading for every rookie.
