  • Border Patrol shoots rock thrower

I was wondering when this would happen. I hope the shooting is in policy, because I think the Border Patrol has had to back off too much. I am somewhat surprised that the Tijuana police seem to be backing the Border Patrol. I have stayed away from Mexico for a long time, but know they were pretty friendly to the local police from California. Of course, the Tijuana police don't like the state or Mexican federal police very much.

Border Patrol agent wounds man near Mexican border

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and wounded a man throwing rocks
at agents near the U.S.-Mexico border in the San Diego area, authorities said Wednesday.

Edgar Israel Ortega Chavez, 22, was hospitalized with a bullet wound in his right
torso after Mexican authorities found him alongside the dry, concrete-lined Tijuana
    River basin, Tijuana police said.

San Diego police said the shooter was a 10-year Border Patrol veteran but did not
release his name. The department is investigating the shooting.

A Border Patrol spokesman, Daryl Reed, said the agent fired his gun on U.S. soil
Tuesday night after seeing the man wielding a softball-sized rock on Mexican soil.
Border Patrol agents tried unsuccessfully to disperse the group who had crossed
to the U.S. side by firing pepper balls and using tear gas.

There was no fence separating the agent from the group when he fired, Reed said.
A yellow stripe on the bottom of the river basin marks the border in the area.

Tijuana police said about 10 people were threatening Border Patrol agents, according
to reports it fielded. Tijuana authorities found a tear gas canister and fragments
and two. 223-caliber bullet shells near Ortega's body.

This is the latest confrontation on an often-violent stretch of border near the
bustling San Ysidro crossing, which separates San Diego and Tijuana. The Border
Patrol began firing tear gas and high-impact pepper balls into Mexico last year
in response to what it said was an alarming increase in attacks on agents.

Lest some ultra liberal think this is an over-reaction, I would remind them that "Stoning" is a common form of capital punishment in Arab countries and that David slew Goliath with a stone. Therefore, a stone is a deadly weapon and certainly falls within the purview of using such action against the hurler. It should be a good shoot because the USBP is too often the target of thoughtless citizens to the South of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The U.S. needs to adopt a more aggressive policy towards those types of attacks and support our border officers.

I often wonder why the press condemns LAPD for shooting rubber projectiles are demonstrators who throw stones. These projectiles can cause injuries (usually bruises), but not as serious as stones can cause.

I also think that a shooting or two is likely to have a salutary effect on the level of violence from Mexicans.

Anyone who doubts that, can come to my house, and I would be willing to conduct a practical exercise aimed at exhibiting the power and damage ability of a rock, thrown at their head...

There was a clear escalation of force. Obviously the verbal commands to disperse went ignored and then it was raised to pepper balls and tear gas. Finally some idiot didn't get the picture and decided to escalate the situation further and picked up a blunt object and tried to it as projectile (rock) thus forcing the BP agent into a self defense mode.

Some liberal might flap their gums on the news about how this is racist or something but I think 12 normal people on a jury will agree that the shoot was justified if it ever got that far.

Every non-lethal resource available was exhausted. This guy insisted in trying to nail an agent with a rock and found himself outgunned. Proper notifications were immediately made. In my opinion this was a good shoot according to common sense, training and policy.

I have no problem with the shooting. I am concerned about what the Border Patrol will do.

Like I said, proper notifications were immediately made and it is within policy. This is not the first time this happens and it won't be the last. You just hear about cases when one of the above is allegedly not met and the agent gets railroaded. Believe it or not, not every agent gets hung out for doing his job.
