  • We're moving!

In less than a month, our new facility will be up and running. We'll be moving inmates from two facilities into the new place. One move will be from a block away, the other from three blocks away.

How have other facilities handled this situation? Is it going to be a huge media / general public event? We have roughly 500 in one facility and 95 in the other, so someone is bound to notice when we begin transporting.

The inmates have been asking when and how it will happen. I tell them that they'll be chained together and walked over as soon as the new "bulls-eye" jumpsuits arrive

I didn't mean national news coverage. I'm more concerned about security for officers and inmates. As another thread mentions, sometimes the media acts before it collectively thinks.

Just wondering if anyone here has been there, done that. Did it work smoothly? Were there a lot of patrol officers as backup?

What security level do you work at. I work in a medium low and we transport inmates daily for release, transfer, medical. Pretty much everything. We don't care guns, they are all cuffed up and leg irons.

          Suggesteds:

-If you work in a very high risk prison, I would have patrol guys.
-I would also don't tell them when they are moving. Just say sometime next week. They don't need to know.
-Be very careful with the new facility. You should get a bunch of officers together and do a very intensive shakedown. Contractors leave knifes, hammers, everything laying around. They don't usually work in this enviroment so they don't think about the risk of a stupid toothbrush.

Well we moved from our old facility last year in July....we did NOT tell anyone of the move but when they saw another county loading up our guys and moving them down the road everyone figured it out pretty quickly. I and several other deputies acted as escort units and made sure no one tried to escape and you just deal with it. When you load them up, make sure you have an area zoned out, shut the street down where the sallyport is, let no one walk or drive in the area. Best to have a tac unit set up as well.

our jail moved about 2 years ago. I didnt work there at the time, but they tell me that they lined the parking lot with field deputies car's then woke the little children up about 3 a.m and ran them over there. luckly they only had to move them across a parking lot.
