  • Nashville Metro/Davidson ounty Correctional Officer

I recived a letter scheduling my written test for Correctional Officer with Nashville Metro/Davidson County. Anybody work for them as a correctional officer? Can anybody answer a few questions about this department?
    1. How is the moral in the jail for employees?
    2. How much is health insurance and other benefits?
    3. How easy is it to move to the road? Metro or County
    4. Anything else you might want to add or think I should know?

    Thanks

I work for the Davidson County Sheriif's Office (DCSO).

      1. Morale is pretty good as far as corrections go. We have a good Sheriff right now and raises are not uncommon. From what I hear, we have a real low turnover rate compared to other departments in corrections.

      2. The health insurance premiums are average to below average premium cost. The co-pays are lower than most private sector employers. The pay starts a little below $30,000, but that isn't to shabby for the Nashville area, at least in my opinion, and it is better than what the state or CCA pays for corrections.

      3. Nashville/Davidson County is a metropolitan government. With the exception of a couple of small town police depts, the Metro Nashville Police Department handles all law enforcement throughout the county. The Sheriff's Office strictly handles corrections and serving civil warrants. Getting into warrants takes a bit of time. However, working for the DCSO for a while doesn't hurt your chances of transferring to MNPD, although you will not be able to do any kind of lateral transfer. You will have to go through their academy too.

      4. It's a pretty good place to work in my opinion. There are some things that can bug you, but that is in any job. PM me if I can help further.
