  • 2 people killed in Fla. prison shooting

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A guard started a gunfight inside a federal prison Wednesday as
FBI agents tried to arrest him and five others accused of trading alcohol and pot for sex with female inmates, officials said. When the shooting was over, two people were dead and another was wounded.

The gunman and a Justice Department investigator were killed in the exchange of gunfire, and a prison employee helping with the arrest was hospitalized, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The victims' names and the condition of the survivor were not immediately released.

The six guards were indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on charges alleging, among other things, that they exchanged contraband such as alcohol, drugs and money for sex with female inmates over a two-year period and used it to buy inmates' silence.

When FBI agents and Justice Department investigators arrived at the center Wednesday morning to arrest the six men, one of the indicted guards shot a federal correctional institution officer, said FBI spokesman John Girgenti. He said the officers fired back.

The agents were not expecting the prison guards to be armed, the law enforcement official told the AP, though he could not immediately explain why.

The official said the guard fired with a personal weapon, wounding the Bureau of Prisons employee who was assisting with the arrest. Agents from the Justice Department's inspector general's office returned fire, killing the guard, the official said, adding that a Justice Department agent was killed in the exchange. It wasn't immediately clear who fired that fatal shot.

"The community is safe. The institution is in lockdown status," federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Carla Wilson said.

The detention center houses mostly men and is part of the Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institution. A low security prison for female inmates is next to the detention center. Together the men's and women's units total 1,445 inmates.

The indictment accused five of the six guards of having sexual contact with eight inmates from September 2003 through September 2005 in exchange for contraband, which could include alcohol, drugs and money.

They guards also were accused of threatening to plant contraband in inmates' belongings or have them shipped to other facilities farther from their families if they reported the illegal activity.

According to the indictment, the guards showed inmates information about themselves and other prisoners on the prison system's computer system to prove their threats were real and that they could be tracked anywhere in the system. It said the guards switched duty assignments to arrange trysts with the female inmates.

Tallahassee police sent every available squad car to the prison at about 7:45 a.m. after receiving a 911 call, spokesman John Newland said.

That is simply because the media, much like you, are uneducated backwoods buffoons who think they are important but really matter little.

Now, go back under your bridge.

I don't know about "uneducated". Although I never took a community college course in "Corrections" from some cop with a mail-order master's degree, I do in fact have a BA from a well known university that the Princeton Review gives a selectivity rating of 89.

I also believe that most writers employed by major newspapers have journalism degrees.

You may have been able to attempt the argument that I am "ignorant" about jails, as I am "ignorant" about the practical operations of a garbage truck because I have never been trained or worked in those professions

By the way, I was a jail guard for nine months, so I do know a little something about it

I knew that Hogbreath would eat this story up...
I'll bet it was tastier than gas-station coffee and day-old donuts.

Guards schmuards... these guys were real pieces of $h!t, who should all be living behind bars.
People who think they know everything are especially annoying to those of us who actually do.

Every profession has it's criminals, and those 6 should have been pulled up three years ago to ensure that if they were true criminals, it stopped right there. So the other criminals to this story are the one who allowed it to go on this long!

We have one OIG Agent dead and a BOP Lt. in serious condition following a line of duty shooting and you're taking pot shots at a whole profession. You don't have to tell us how smart you are...we now already know.
                      Don't worry...all bleeding stops eventually!!

You have people in every job that may or may not belong there. Some go into this profession for the wrong reason. Those individuals in Florida apparently did not respect themselves or this profession. BUt lets not take pot shots at each other.

It never ceases to amaze me that some people in our profession will lower themselves to the level of the very people that we have been asked to protect society as a whole from.

Not only that, but as a red-blooded american male, I really can't remember the last time I looked at a female offender and thought, I WANT SOME OF THAT!

Look em up and make them share a cell with the biggest ugliest horniest dude in the cellblock!

I have NEVER taken pot shots at prison guards

I respect the job you do. I think you should get a raise and some extra vacation.

And I think those guards who shot those other guards are/were rotten people
