I want to learn more about corrections. Is this the best corrections forum or are there some others that I should also join?

  • #2
Theres a better forum out there, forgot the exact link but it discusses all about being a corrections officer. Also discusses what its like to be an inmate.

Ha I left the IDOC for the same reason- cold cold cold! I'm at Coleman not too far from Orlando. The pay is less than what you are making in NY but with the cost of living here it more than evens out! The BOP will be a lot different than what you have seen in NY so if you do come be prepared for a serious culture shock! The weather is wonderful if you can deal with lots of rain but winter here is on average in the 60's...

Iowa I looked around didn't see much about them comparing federal to local the only thing I noticed was that Feds give into inmates to keep them quiet not sure if that is accurate. Please chime in.

I am thinking about applying to Coleman FCC as well. Do the facilities there hire COs often? I am also in NY but I do not have any corrections experience. I have an associate's degree in criminal justice and I have been working full time in retail loss prevention for the past four years. I know I am not the most competitive candidate when compared to those with corrections experience, but I figure I may have better luck getting hired if I apply to a facility larger than some of the ones here in NY. I am also looking to get away from the NY winters (not to mention the NY taxes).

It's really impossible to explain the differences but the BOP isn't as bad a place to work as some say- thats why they continue to come in on a daily basis.
