  • DNA Collection??? WTF?

Ok, so I check my work email today, and there is an open training announcement for people to collect DNA samples from inmates. One of our associate wardens even sent out an appeal to staff members to take the training because 80% (1600+) of the inmates in our institution needed to give samples.

In my mind this is something that our medical staff should be doing, not COs. Also I was wondering why these samples weren't taken when the inmates entered our facility instead of now all of the sudden out of no where.

It's bad enough we have to watch dudes pee when doing U/As, and watch them crap in a dry cell, but damn if I am doing a medical professional's job, I want a pay raise.

All inmates in Iowa have DNA taken at reception.............................and have for the last 10 yrs or so.

When the law was passed requiring it-------there was quite a back up in getting the samples taken on the idiots already in custody but we just escorted them to medical where a mouth swab was taken.

Yea medical bitched about having to do all the extra work----------------but they did the swabs.

        That's essentially all it is.

IMO, it's more pleasant than watching a pizz test or supervising a dry cell.

You make it sound like it is going to be simple. Oh hell no. The real reason they want COs doing it is because you are going to have a bunch of inmates who aren't going to want to do it, and will possibly get violent and we will have to force them. All when the BOP should have been doing this years ago upon entry into the facility.

To me it is the same as making cops do blood draws on DUI suspects.

Actually, that sounds like a good reason. Medical techs are not equipped to deal with violent inmates.

Also, it is more analogous to making a police officer administer a breath or urine test for DUI -- which they do.

Keep in mind that the whole BOP 'theory' is that all non-custody staff have secondary law enforcement duties. That is why they send everyone (including all medical staff) to FLETC.

We just placed them in AdSeg until they complied.

The inmates that resist are probably doing so because they know their DNA can be connected to some unsolved crime.

Put them in seg until they comply. If authorities are interested in an inmate as suspect in an unsolved crimes, their are many other ways we can get get a sample of their DNA.

Kansan, I understand your beef, but prison inmate DNA is so important to criminal investigators at all levels. If you keep that in mind while doing it, it may take away some of the displeasure.
