What's the difference between a prison and a penitentiary?
When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me."

    To answer--------your question------

    No discernible difference.

Prison is the generic term for a Correctional Facility-----penitentiary often is the Proper Noun (As in the sentence"The Iowa State Penitentiary is a prison.") .

The term penitentiary normally connotates a more restrictive setting (or higher level of security) but in real life the terms are interchangeable.

The term "penitentiary" stems from the rather quaint notion that prisoners would reflect upon and atone for their sins.

And like almost every other "Correctional Theory" ---that was proved false shortly after it was put into practical use.

While we're at it, the word "corrections" is a symptom of another failed theory.

I would say an instructor presents material, the teacher makes sure the students understand and can use the material presented. That's just my opinion.

              Thanks guys for the answers.

True, but like the two terms you questioned, for the most part those two terms are used interchangeably by most lay persons.
