OSSINING — More than 700 Sing Sing inmates were roused from bed and their housing units evacuated about 3:30 a.m. today after fire was discovered in a basement electrical area.
Smoke drove out all 686 men confined in one housing unit and 29 men in the disciplinary confinement area to the gymnasium and yards while firefighters from the prison and Ossining Fire Department got the blaze under control.
The majority of inmates were back in their beds within a few hours; the 29 men were moved to another secure area pending evaluation of the building where they were being held, said Linda Foglia, a spokeswoman with the state Department of Correctional Services.
No one was injured in the fire or the evacuation, she said. The cause of the fire was unavailable, but it appears to have been electrical, she said.

Glad to hear the nobody was injured. I can see the locals in Ossining trying to use this as ammo to get the state to shut down Sing Sing so that they can use the land to develop the riverside condominiums they want to build.
