I'm new to this thread and I'm currently in the process for MDC LOs Angeles. Just finished my UA and physical and look forward to whats next.

Question: after GL 7 what else is there when it comes to promotion and other jobs within the BOP or even the DOJ? My ultimate Goal is to do US Marshals or ICE but at the same time excel as a CO.

Question 2: Is there a website or employee portal for these internal positions or are they open to the public?

Sorry if these questions have been posted. I've skimmed through the forum and didn't find much.
After 1 year at the GL 7 Senior Officer position you are eligible to put in for a GL 8 Senior Officer Specialist job (eligible but depending on the joint not likely) New institutions of complexes are a little easier to promote than older stand alones. After one year at the GL 8 you are eligible to put in for a GL 9 LT.

As far as jumping ship to the Marshals good luck. It has been done but there is a LOT of competition for very limited spots. The only internal notice you get being BOP is for other BOP jobs that are for BOP staff only in the way they write up the job announcement. For other agencies it is normally posted through USA jobs so you would have to apply like everyone else. The only thing you get is the same consideration as any other current Federal employee.

    Good luck

Wow, thanks for the quick answers.

Here are a couple more if u don't mind taking a look at.

      1) I see that there are steps to each pay grade. (1-10)
How does that time frame work?

      2) Also, me being a veteran and having a degree do I get bumped to a certain step or do all GL 6 employees start at step 1 and move along the steps at the same rate?
Since I'll be leaving a better paying job for FOB I want to budget myself now. Don't ask why, lol. It's has to do with me not loving big corporate companies.

      Thanks in advance.

At whatever grade you hire in at Everyone will be a step 1 (Gl 5 step 1, 6 step 1) What several places have done the last 4 years of so is even with experience EVERYONE was starting at GL 5 step 1. it is BS but up to the Warden and all Wardens are held to the fire to keep cost down and that is an easy way. The first 4 years you bet a step increase automatically. The first 2 or 3 years you ge a grade increase (depending on where you hire in at)

You hire in at a GL 5 step 1 at your 1 year anniversary you go to a GL 6 step 3 then at the 2nd anniversary you go to a GL 7 step 3 then at the 3rd year a GL 7 step 4. Then it is only step increases. You get them automatically every 3 years after that or can get a Quality Step Increase (QSI) by getting an Outstanding eval or other award. However with the budget the last few years they cut them out for a while.

If you hir in as a GL 6 step 1 on your anniversary you will be a 7 step 1 then on your 2nd anniversary you will be a 7 step 3 then on your 3rd a 7 step 4 then ever 3 years you get a step increase.

The GL 8 is a competitive promotion so depending on the institution more than you so it will probably be minute for that.

As far as pay with step increases getting a few QSI's and picking up my 8 and 9 I doubled my base pay (I'm talking base pay only I am not including O/T) in about 9 years. then the pay freeze started the last 4-5 years so I haven't got the raises I did the first 9 years. You also have to factor in Sunday pay, holidays and O/T.

Without O/T with shift differential and Sunday and Holliday you can add about $4,500 to your base pay. Then depending on institution any O/T on top of that. A lot of institutions have no O/T others are off the hook. Mine runs anywhere from 25 to 60 shifts a day in O/T. Some work once a week, some would work everyday and others do non unless mandatoried.

Some Officers are bringing in 100,000 a year but again that will depend on the institution

Welcome to the forums Cleanguy! Just curious do you have any law enforcement experience? Just like Shooter said, everyone starts at the same paygrade. I was in the same boat as you when I applied - no LEO experience but I had a college degree and military. I was a little worried, the other applicants that went to the interview with me were all prior military and LEO but they didnt have a degree. I think we all got hired though.

Dox, I send you a PM but not sure if you turned them on. I was wondering what facility you interviewed for. I interviewed for one around the same time.

                Hello,

I've been on these forums for a while and overall I hear a lot of good things about the BOP. I like the career opportunities that BOP has to offer as my goal is to take on various job assignments and promote within the organization. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like a lot of positive stuff going on here.
Can someone let me know the benefits of working for federal? As mentioned before this is a huge pay cut for me but I really want this job if offered. I know being money driven isn't a good thing but living here in Cali I think that GL 5 is borderline poverty level. Not to complain but how are you all doing when it comes to cost of living? (Especially when you start off)
To make this decision even more difficult I just got a 8% raise at my current job that I hate. I guess I'm a great worker 😊

                  Thanks all

Other people can probally give you a better response but from what I understand BOP is pretty much set up like the military. There is a pension after 20 years of service plus you get the thrift savings plan - a 401k plan that has a very low cost.

ETA: If you are a reservist they give you 15 days of military leave a year. Meaning, when you go do your annual training you will get paid from both the reserves and from BOP. I really dont know anyone in the private sector that does that.

Sounds good. So you got the official offer already? Tell us more about your experience with the hiring process. When is your start date? Did you have to relocate to a different city and if so how did you go about it? I will have to relocate to USP Atlanta and as soon as I get the firm offer (some time this week) I will get an apartment the last week of may or first week in june.

I've compiled 4 of these posts that people have posted their dates no names or anything. I am using it to get a baseline on the timeline of the process. They seem pretty similar but some stages come in different orders. What I've noticed with my process that differs then three of the 4, is most got their conditional before doing their medical.

                              - applied 10/15/2013
                              - interview 1/8/2014
                              - UA and Physical 3/12/14 with conditional offer that friday
                              - Met with background investigator 4/24/14
                              - Firm offer sometime this week......

Note that I did meet with my investigator prior to my start date. I see that many people start working before the background investigation begins.

Expect to forget that you even applied for a job and in 2-3 months you will get an interview email that seems like it came from nowhere. Also, Judging by my hiring process it seems that each step in the process has at least a month wait.
